JB gave me a copy of The Zombie Survival Guide and I cannot put it down. I highly recommend it, especially if you’re already semi-obsessed with zombies and you find yourself thinking about them at least as frequently as you think about, say, which boat crew on Deadliest Catch is going to get the most crab this season, which is to say, probably more often than is healthy.

The book includes, among other things, instructions for making your house as safe as possible during the inevitable zombie invasion. Basically, if you live in a one-story house without an attic—as we do—you’re fucked. You have to get on the roof. So now I think we should scrap this whole kitchen remodel business and build a second floor. With built-in zombie trapdoors. And multiple brain-smashing tools, such as crowbars, stashed in convenient locations.

What? It’s only paranoia if zombies don’t exist.

(STOP LOOKING AT ME LIKE THAT.)

I went running (so as to better prepare myself for escaping zombies, of course) yesterday evening, as long as we collectively define “running” as “alternating between trotting and walking while consistently producing the sort of wheezing you’d hear from an elderly, asthmatic pug”. It was a gorgeous, warm day here in Seattle (also, I would have loved a little of this sudden summery weather over the weekend instead of the chilly gray skies we did have, I mean what’s with the 75-degree temperatures showing up when I’ve got to sit in an office all day? NOOO THEY BE STEALIN MY BUCKET) and by the time I got back home I felt quite virtuous, what with my sheen of sweat and all. I’ll tell you, there’s nothing in the world like the feeling you get from running . . . when you stop, that is.

I’m looking to create the Ultimate Playlist for Running, because the iPod really does make all the difference in terms of distraction and motivation to keep going (instead of giving in to my natural desire to curl up on the road and weep steadily into the pavement). So far I’ve got:

Run Rabbit Run, Eminem
When the Music Stops, Eminem
Whiskey in the Jar, Metallica
Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger, Daft Punk
Blue Orchid, White Stripes
Buzzbomb, Dead Kennedys
Charlotte Mittnacht (The Fabulous Destiny Of…) , DeVotchKa (This one’s great for the end when you stagger up your driveway all triumphant-like.)

Perhaps you noticed this is a short list. Well, shut it. I can’t run very far yet. But on the theory that someday I will be able to pug-wheeze along far enough to need a longer playlist, or just to have some rotation, I want your recommendations. Share your favorite heart-pumping, zombie-escaping songs—anything that motivates you to move. Otherwise, I’m just going to add more Eminem, and then my language is just going to get worse. Won’t you think of the children?

i don’t actually RUN, but i do walk briskly. i have a list of some Walkin’ Songs…i have all kinds of weird shit on it..but here’s some that other people might actually like: Get Busy – Sean Paul, Mambo Italiano – Rosemary Clooney, Little Green Bag – George Baker, Miserlou – Dick Dale & the Deltones (from teh pulp fiction sound track). i’m also digging the black eyed peas Elefunk at the moment.

    hope that helps.

linda, i thought of you when i was in new orleans a few weeks ago. i had a near run-in with the zombies there. you can read my account of what happened here: http://blog.myspace.com/starmonkey21 (click on “sometimes zombies are a valid fear”)

Okay, I just finished reading World War Z and the Survival Guide is already next on my list. I have been having zombie dreams for several nights now, which is not altogether awesome if you live in a tent and hear small-arms fire at all hours while you “sleep.” (Because you NEVER KNOW if the enemy is dead, or undead.) But I do rest easy knowing that I sleep with an M16 by my side, and I am not a completely terrible marksman, so there is that. Also, my sergeant major is highly skilled in the art of zombie warfare, and has already promised to be my sidekick. (”You can’t go wrong with a machete,” is what he says.)

For your running music, I strongly recommend anything by the Bloodhound Gang (Foxtrot Uniform Charlie Kilo is especially perfect to get the pace going) as well as the Ramones. I swear I took a solid minute off of my two-mile run just because Sheena IS a Punk Rocker.

  5. Amy on May 8th, 2007 2:17 pm

I’m searching for the exact same kind of music! I recently downloaded some old Nirvana and Beastie Boys (”Sabotage,” etc.), as well as “Mama Said Knock You Out” by LL Cool J. Led Zeppelin works for me, too (”Livin Lovin Maid,” etc.).

Thanks for sharing your list, too!

I like LCD Soundsystem’s “Daft Punk Is Playing At My House”. BUCKET!

  7. Robyn on May 8th, 2007 2:18 pm

Some of my favorites that really get me pumped…

Shipping up to Boston by Dropkick Murphys
C’mon, C’mon by the Von Bondies (theme song from Rescue Me)
Somebody Told Me by the Killers

Another song that’s not as hard core as the other two – but I love it anyway because it’s catchy and upbeat

The way that I am by Ingrid Michaelson

  8. Amy on May 8th, 2007 2:18 pm

And how could I forget, that new Avril Lavigne song, “Girlfriend.” That song kicks ASS! Specifically, mine, into gear.

  9. Robyn on May 8th, 2007 2:21 pm

One More Time by Daft Punk

    My Love by Justin Timberlake

I have a really weird playlist for walking/running those are 2 from the list that have an upbeat get you butt moving kind of thing going on.

I like to call waht I do “running” (can’t bring myself to use “jogger” but it’s accurate) but I guess I’m more sashaying and loping along. Two songs I like to run to “Going the Distance” by Cake and “Running on Empty” by Jackson Browne (because that’s how I feel every single run). Keep it up–it does get better and the best part about running is that it feels so damn good to stop.

  12. Chrissy on May 8th, 2007 2:27 pm

As a lurker who doesn’t often comment (though a long time adorer-of-all-things-sundry), I feel rather undeserving of the coveted “First Comment!” title, but there we are. I’m a college swimmer who runs mostly in the off-season to stay in shape, and while I enjoy running (though you are far from wrong in your assessment of its total suckitude when first starting out, even yesterday, after not running for a few days and feeling a little congested and craptastic in the lung region, I panted around the track feeling rather like an elderly asthmatic pug myself, wanting nothing more than to tear my running shoes from my blistered feet and dramatically proclaim that I quit, goddamit, and fetal position it up right then and there…maybe with a really big chocolate chip cookie even. I mean wait! Runnings great! Moving on…) I firmly believe that the Perfect Running Playlist is key. I refuse to run without music. Point blank.

So, without further ado (or untentionally discouraging ramble, rather), my current PRP. I edit it evey so often, but this has been the core for a few months now.

In no particular order (im rarely out of shuffle mode):

The Winner Is- Devotchka & Mychael Danna
    The Captain- Guster
    Treehouse- I’m From Barcelona
    Everything’s Just Wonderful- Lily Allen
    Monster Hospital- Metric
    War on Sound- Moonbabies
    Hotel Song- Regina Spektor
    What Ever Happened- The Strokes
Hong Kong Garden- Siouxsie & The Banshees (Marie Antoinette soundtrack)
    Portions for Foxes- Rilo Kiley
Pulling Our Weight- The Radio Dept.
    Ceremony- New Order
Catwalkin’- Tony Tisdale (ridiculous gem from The Little Miss Sunshine soundtrack, when they introduce that terrifying parade of miniscule beauty queens)
Slide- Goo Goo Dolls (not a huge fan in general, but can’t help but have some sentimental ties, as they hail from my beloved hometown of Buffalo, NY)

Well I have no references for running because I run to things others would just find unbelievably nerdy, so will attempt to salvage some dignity there. However, loved the Zombie Survival Guide. Because we too live in a one level without an attic, I’ve spent far too much time thinking about the perfect place to make a stand – my office building. Now I’m reading Plague of the Dead which is in no way as good as WWZ or the ZSG, but I must feed my obsession with zombies somehow.

OK so I’ve not salvaged any dignity with this post…

  14. Chrissy on May 8th, 2007 2:29 pm

Oh dear, all that preamble about being the First Comment and I was actually far from in the end. Whoooooopsiedoops.

  15. Amy M. on May 8th, 2007 2:34 pm

I’ve been running since high school, so I have a great collection of running music. Unfortunately, it’s all in cassette/cd format. I know – so very 1990s of me!

“The Power” by Snap is a great running song – “I’ve got the power!”
“Rollin’” by Limp Bizkit is great, as is “Eye of the Tiger” by Survivor (not the best beat, but it makes me think of Rocky), “Whip It” by Devo and “Laid” by James.

“Break My Stride” by Matthew Wilder is good for a cool-down or warm-up (it’s a little on the slow side).

  16. Jen on May 8th, 2007 2:39 pm

something about “cowboy” by kid rock is good for my motivation.

good for you and the running. I used to hate running, got hooked on it as exercise/stress relief, and then my knees turned 80 before the rest of my body turned 30 and now I can’t. wah.

  17. Erin on May 8th, 2007 2:45 pm

I really have to suggest (not to broaden your base of Eminem or anything) Eminem – Till I Collapse. I’ve had it on my running mix for about 2 years but it still gets me “pumped” quite consistently. And thoroughly.

  18. Bill on May 8th, 2007 2:46 pm

I don’t think I’ve commented on your site for over a year but wanted to say (aside from the fact that your blog is great!) that if you like The Zombie Survival Guide, you will LOVE World War Z.

  19. Irene on May 8th, 2007 2:57 pm

You should watch Shaun of The Dead.
    Amazing movie!!
You totally crack me up by the way and thanks for that.

  20. Roseann on May 8th, 2007 2:58 pm

Korn Right Now. It’s all about punching someone in the face, and the anger in the song motivates me to run/bike faster.
I also almost always start my workouts with Breathe by Anna Nalick.

  21. Laura on May 8th, 2007 2:59 pm

How about a song for beating the shit out of zombies?

Don’t Stop Me Now – Queen

Shot Shot by Gomez is also a pretty good running song.

  22. Em on May 8th, 2007 3:02 pm

Sometimes I trot/walk much in the way you describe, but usually just as a 10-15 minute precursor for getting on the ole’ elliptical trainer.

Anyway, for me, it’s all about tempo: pretty fast for the elliptical and a little slower for the jogging. A lot of my jog/trot/walk/elliptical workout mix is pretty crappy stuff, but it’s got a beat and you can sweat to it. Here are some on the regular rotation right now:

Go Go Gadget Gospel –Gnarles Barkely
    B.O.B –OutKast
    Push It –Garbage
Love Rollercoaster –Red Hot Chili Peppers
    Climbatize –Prodigy
    Superhero –KMFDM
Fell in Love with a Girl, Seven Nation Army –White Stripes
Are you gonna’ be my Girl –Jet
    Paint it Black –Rolling Stones
No Direction, Modern Man –Bad Religion
The Great Escape, Beginning of the End –Guster
    My name is Jonas –Weezer
    Villians, Hero –The Verve Pipe
    Rolling –Soul Coughing
Jonathan Fisk, The Way We Get By, Small Stakes –Spoon
Te Aviso Te Anuncio (Objection Tango), La Tortura –Shakira
    Knights of Cydonia –Muse
    Hey Ya –OutKast
    One More Time –DaftPunk
    Toxic –Britney (shame!)
Lose my Breath, Survivor –Destiny’s Child
    Local God –Everclear
    Praise You –Fatboy Slim
    Just Tonight –Jimmy Eat World

  23. Carl on May 8th, 2007 3:07 pm

I found that AC/DC’s It’s a long way to the top (if you want to rock and roll) increased my rate of climb on mt whitney from 1000′/hour to 1500′/hour.

    No other music did better.

  24. Katy B on May 8th, 2007 3:13 pm

Some recent additions to my playlist (in order of ascending intensity):

    Chicago – Sufjan Stevens
    Postcards from Italy – Beirut
Upon This Tidal Wave of Young Blood – Clap Your Hands Say Yeah (it HAS to be about zombies)
Very Loud – Shout Out Louds
    Club Foot – Kasabian
Numb (Encore) – Jay Z & Linkin Park
Testify – Rage Against the Machine

I’m normally an indie listener and tend toward the mellow, but these songs make me want to speed up or at least keep going. Good luck!

My husband is obsessed with zombies, and it’s rubbing off on me. We went to hear David Sedaris read the other night and his book recommendation was the Zombie Survival Guide. Apparently my husband was the only one in the crowd of 2000 who’d read it, because he yelped and started clapping in the amused silence. I second the recommendation of World War Z. Also, if you’re into this sort of thing, the audio version is amazing.

  25. Pickles & Dimes on May 8th, 2007 3:14 pm

Whenever I run, my only rule for music is that it has a good beat. Here’s my list:

Eye of the Tiger – Survivor
Holding out for a Hero – Bonnie Tyler
SexyBack – Justin Timberlake (I’m so ashamed!)
    Lose Yourself – Eminem
    Light Fingered – Composure
    Hell Above Water – Curve
    Holiday – Green Day
Hollaback Girl – Gwen Stefani (Again, ashamed)
    Let’s Go Crazy – Prince
All the Things She Said – t.A.T.u.
Send me an angel – Thrice
    Crystal Ship – X
Pure Reality – Popnuvo feat. :Lotus

  26. Susan on May 8th, 2007 3:17 pm

When I used to run, oh…about a million years ago, I swore by Kid Rock’s “Devil Without a Cause.” The entire CD would keep me going and going and going…

Ca Plane Pour Moi, The Headcoatees (obscure, I know)
    Rebel Girl, Bikin Kill

I think you need more Britney Spears in your life… “Stonger,” the already mentioned “Toxic,” “Hit me Baby,” and once you have Britney in your life you might as well get some Christina Aguilera too, “Dirrty,” and “Fighter.” Also, I’m telling you Irene Cara “Fame” and “What a Feeling” always get me smiling on a run. Cheesy but so easy to run to.

  31. Maureen on May 8th, 2007 3:46 pm

How about the Melissa Etheridge song “I Run for Life”-it makes me teary eyed, but it is kind of inspiring.

  32. Beth on May 8th, 2007 3:48 pm

Two of my running faves, back when I ran….so these may be a bit dated:

    -”Battle Flag,” by Lo-Fidelity Allstars
This song will not so much improve your language, but it will make you want to kick some ass.

-”Lift Your Head Up High and Blow Your Brains Out” by Bloodhound Gang
Not so PC by any estimation, but picking out the lyrics takes your mind off of the rasping breath and shin splints.

  33. Rumblelizard on May 8th, 2007 3:52 pm

Bjork’s first solo album “Debut” is excellent workout music.

  34. Josh on May 8th, 2007 3:54 pm

I’m so glad you’re not over the zombie thing. People just don’t understand how important/awesome zombies are. As for me, you can bet I’ll pony up the cash from my poor empty wallet this friday to get into a dark room and watch a big screen with zombies on it. 28 Weeks Later is coming out! Boo yah! I loved 28 Days Later. One of the best zombie flicks ever. Nothing better than super fast/strong/smart/vicious/contagious zombies.

As for youz music request. (that’s right, youz) Hmmmm. I’m asuming you want high octane shit to pump up your adrenaline so you can pug wheeze to your hearts content in some sort of asphixiated endorphine high.

The Basement Jaxx: Where’s Your Head At
Outkast: Ghetto Music, Bombs Over Baghdad, Rosa Parks
the Cardigans: Losing My Favority Game
Lilly Allen: Knock Em Out, Oh My God,
Andrew WK: Party Hard (actually everything by them is good and really high tempo)
Flogging Molly: Drunken Lullabies, Seven Deadly Sins, Pirate Song (again, good + upbeat)
Mindless Self Indulgence: Stupid Mother Fucker, Straight to Video (see above)
System of a Down: BYOB, Bounce, Thetawaves
Disturbed: Down With the Sickness, Land of Confusion, Dropping Plates, 10,000 Fists in the Air
Drowning Pool: Let the Bodies Hit the Floor
Iron Maiden: Powerslave, Run to the Hills, 666 Number of the Beast
Bloodhound Gang: Untiss Untiss Untiss, Balls Out
Old Dirty Bastard (Wu Tang Clan): Shimmy Shimmy Yaw
Rage Against the Machine: Guerilla Radio, Renegades of Funk
    Tenacious D: Master Exploder
    Crazytown: Darkside, Lollipop Porn
    Teddy Bears Stockholm: Hey Boy
    Gnarles Barkley: Gone Daddy Gone
Presidents of the United States of America: Peaches
    NOFX: Bob, Linoleum

    Sean Paul – Get Busy
En Vogue – Free your mind
Pink – Get the party started
    Cake – The Distance

As for running, I like listening to the This American Life podcasts lately. Not as exciting as music but it helps take your mind off the fact that you’re running.

Okay I just checked my nano and here are some of the songs on my playlist that I love:

    Faster running:
Outkast – BOB (saw it was already mentioned, right on!)
Missy Elliot – Lose Control (a workout/run playlist withouth Missy Elliott is NOT a playlist)
Missy Elliott – Pass that Dutch
    Hot Potato – Freestyle Fellowship
Kanye West – The New Workout Plan
    Blackalicious – Chemical Calisthenics

    Medium pace:
Mos Def ft. Busta Rhymes – Do it now!
    Freestyle Fellowship – Cornbread
Aaliyah – Try Again (good motivation song)
Black Eyed Peas – Request (this is pre-Fergie music, so it’s not obnoxious)
Mos Def – New World Water

    Slower pace:
Kanye West – All Falls Down
    De La Soul – Oooh

    Good luck! Hope you like!

  42. Philos on May 8th, 2007 5:05 pm

Surely you have the Propellerheads, Decksanddrumsandrockandroll, yes? The whole album is brilliant, and half the songs are upbeat drum’n'bass tracks that are made for moving fast.

Also in the instrumental vein, I’d recommend Man Or Astro-man? – I’ve only got one album by them, Destroy All Astro-men!, but it’s all space-surf-rock and again most of the tracks are made for moving fast.

  43. g~ on May 8th, 2007 5:41 pm

    Northwestern.
    Sig always wins.
Although I particularly like Cornelia Marie–Jake freakin pulled out his own tooth with a set of pliers!
    Ack!

  44. Ashley on May 8th, 2007 5:45 pm

That chariots of Fire song popped into my head first, or maybe the Eye of the Tiger? Oh you want ‘real’ music? hmm, here is what I would have on rotation.

NIN for sure, they have many songs that build up to very high energy
Marilyn Manson (no I am not embarrased that I love him)
Cake has a lot of fun energetic songs
    Rio, Duran Duran
The entire Kill ‘em All album/ Metalica, that is like sticking speed in your ear
White Stripes is a good pick
    The Specials
Red Hot Chili Peppers/ Uplift Mofo Party Plan
    Fugazi
That’s all I have right now, August is screaming

  45. Amy on May 8th, 2007 6:02 pm

    Hey Mama- Black Eyed Peas
Since U Been Gone – Kelly Clarkson
One girl revolution – Sheryl Crow
Dirty Little Secret- All America Rejects
    Smack that- Alcon
    BOB- Outkast
Smile like you mean it, all these things that I’ve done – The Killers
    Crutch- Matchbox 20

(If you’re at all a fan of country, these are good too):
Let ‘er rip – Dixie Chicks
    Bones- Little Big Town
Ain’t going down till the sun comes up- Garth Brooks

  46. Shu on May 8th, 2007 6:18 pm

    Mr. Brightside – The Killers
    Anything Anything – Dramarama
Pump It – Black Eyed Peas
Walk Like An Egyptian – The Bangles
    Sexy Back – JT
    Hot in Herre – Nelly
Blister in the Sun – Violent Femmes

Good luck running – I am also experiencing the suckage of getting back into it!

That Avril Lavigne song “Girlfriend” kicks my ass into gear too. I listened to it three times in the last 2 miles of the mini marathon I ran this weekend and without it I would have been so “Eat my dust!” as I was at the end.

  48. dani on May 8th, 2007 6:22 pm

okay, so i don’t run. i bike. and the pace might be a little different (maybe?), but, i LOVE my husband’s biking mix. here it is. (the songs with asterisks at the end are ones that are a little lesser known, but i think YOU in particular will like them.):

You probably haven’t heard a lot of Aussi music (except ACDC) so here’s an education. Check out the Spiderbait version of “Black Betty” – really down and dirty). And try out songs by “The Living End” particularly their much loved anthem “Prisoner of Society” With lyrics like “Cos I’m a brat, And I know everything, And I talk back, Cos I’m not listening, To anything you say” how can you go wrong! (Unfortunately my children have now dicovered the lyrics and are intent on living them)
But if you want american I’d choose pretty much anything by Greenday (except for that soppy song from Seinfeld) or The Offspring (especially thier early stuff eg “Come out and Play”).
    Happy downloading

These are on heavy rotation during my workouts:

The Numbers Song – DJ Shadow
Get It Together – Beastie Boys
    No Brakes – The Bravery
My Beatbox – Deejay Punk Roc
    Breakout – Foo Fighters
    Yo-Yo – Basement Jaxx

  52. christen on May 8th, 2007 7:22 pm

I love to run to disco/dance and some classic rock songs. The beat is just perfect for a 5mph run/walk. Some of my current faves are:

I Don’t Feel Like Dancing (Scissor Sisters)
Looking for You (Kirk Franklin–yes, it’s gospel, but it rocks)
    Boogie Wonderland
    September (Earth, Wind & Fire)
    Separate Ways (Journey)
Heaven Must be Missing an Angel (Tavares)
Boogie Oogie Oogie (A Taste of Honey)
…or, you may choose the dance remake, Delicious (Pure Sugar)
Get Right Back Where We Started From (Maxine Nightingale)
I’m Too Sexy (Right Said Fred…okay, it just makes me laugh long enough to get through 3 more minutes!)
    Don’t Stop Believin’ (more Journey)
    Oh Sherrie (Steve Perry)

    Then to cool down…
Turn the Radio Up (Eric Carmen…classic!)
What You Won’t Do For Love

  53. Sian Elizabeth on May 8th, 2007 7:42 pm

When I’m running and I know I can do just a little bit more the two songs that get me through are:
    1) Party Up – DMX
    2) Call On Me – Eric Prydz

The best thing about the second song is that it’s 3 minutes long and very repetitive, so it’s over before you know it.

  54. goddess of clarity on May 8th, 2007 7:48 pm

Long time lurker, first time commenter. Love your show.

I have a couple 3-mile running playlists on the old Nano. Here’s a sample:

Peaches — Presidents of the United States of America (warm-up song; last exactly three minutes)
Lust for Life — Iggy Pop (gets me to exactly half a mile)
Flagpole Sitta — Harvey Danger (for old times sake; I imagine I’m back in Seattle on the Burke Gillman Trail)
    Ride a White Swan — T Rex
    Hot Stuff — Donna Summer
Son of A Preacher Man (an odd one, but it works. I imagine I’m knocking them dead with my Dusty Springfield chops at some local karaoke bar)
    Ray of Light — Madonna
Reach Up For the Sunrise — Duran Duran
If I Ever Leave This World Alive — Flogging Molly (for when I feel like I’m about to pass out)

And for cool down: Fix You by Coldplay. Because at this point I feel I could do with some fixing. Or a nap.

    undertow – tool

  56. ShannonJ on May 8th, 2007 8:29 pm

I haven’t been running in awhile; I usually do the cardio machines, but here are some from my workout collection that might be up your alley, as well as some that were on my running mix when I did run:

    Machinehead – Bush
Mr. Jones – Talking Heads (love the horns)
    Blind – Talking Heads (ditto)
    Comfort Eagle – Cake
    Black Tambourine – Beck
    Dope Nose – Weezer
    Hash Pipe – Weezer
    Head Over Heels – GoGos
Our Lips are Sealed – GoGos
You Wreck Me – Tom Petty
Middle of the Road – Pretenders
I Want to Take You Higher – Sly and the Family Stone
    Thank You Faletting Me… – ”
    Go – Pearl Jam
Pon de Replay – Rihanna (same shame level as Britney)
    Elevation – U2
    Peace Frog – Doors

…. can’t think of them all… i love making mixes and wish that the iPod had been around when I was younger and had all the time in the world to do them. I used to spend hours in front of the turntable/double deck cassette recorder.

I heard a song called Nowhere With You by Joel Plaskett Emergency on Perez Hilton’s site tonight. Sounds like an AMAZING running song. http://www.joelplaskett.com or http://perezhilton.com/topics/listen_to_this/listen_to_this_dr_beat_20070508.php

  58. Kiwi on May 8th, 2007 9:00 pm

don’t know if it’s been mentioned yet since I’m terrible at skimming through 40+ comments, but you can always add Richard Cheese’s version of “Down with the Sickness”. A lovely song featured in the remake of Dawn of the Dead.

  59. Ashley on May 8th, 2007 9:12 pm

Oooo I thought of another one….
    David Bowie-suffragette city
Iggy and the Stooges are fun too!

  60. Naomi on May 8th, 2007 10:38 pm

You want more? I’ll give you more……
Well not really, but maybe just one more. Call me slow, (but then I am from down under..) but I have recently discovered Wolfmother – partcularly Joker and the Thief. Worked out to it this morning and that’ll get your heart pumping. Iggy Pops “Lust for Life” isn’t bad either

  61. Shannon on May 8th, 2007 10:53 pm

Any song off of Luscious Jackson’s first release (1993) “In Search Of Manny” would be great jogging music! So would that one awesome song by Northern State “Dying in Stereo.” You’ll be singing along as you run! And all of it is girl-power music, to use a cheesy but appropos phrase. :)

  62. Naomi on May 8th, 2007 10:53 pm

Ooh Ooh Ooh!!! I completely forgot about the “Rogue Traders” (Another Aussie band of course)

  63. Elizabeth on May 8th, 2007 11:18 pm

I love listening to Charlotte Mittnacht when I’m riding on the train, because I feel oddly transported back to the 1930s, and it makes the passing scenery seem a little more quaint. I’ve never listened to it while running, but now I’ll have to try…

    My music recommendations would include:

Kings of the Wild Frontier – Adam & The Ants
Here It Goes Again – OK Go
Take Me Out – Franz Ferdinand
    U + Ur hand – Pink
Danger! High Voltage – Electric Six
    Whatever Happened – The Strokes
A Southern Thing – Better Than Ezra
Live Fast, Die Young – DeVotchKa
I Want Candy – Bow Wow Wow
Build Me Up Buttercup – The Gimme Gimmes
Le Disko – Shiny Toy Guns
The Saints Are Coming – Better Than Ezra
    Better Off Dead – Faders
The Love of My Life – Cowboy Mouth

Here are my humble suggestions for wheezing around the neighborhood…

Ladytron – Destroy Everything You Touch, or Seventeen
Air – Sexy Boy, or Surfing On A Rocket
Lily Allen – Friday Night or Everything’s Just Wonderful
Nada Surf – Blankest Year (if anything just for its chorus of “Oh fuck it, I’m gonna have a party!”)
New Order – Bizarre Love Triangle
Pet Shop Boys – West End Girls, or What Have I Done To Deserve This (which is what I often ask myself whilst limping around the last corner before home.)

Sorry if any of these are repeats from above!

  66. Sadie on May 9th, 2007 6:01 am

Only one suggestion, as I see the prior commenters have pretty much covered it all.

Brick House by The Commodores – I clean the house like I’m on speed to this one.

  67. Christina on May 9th, 2007 6:15 am

I feel so freakin’ old… who are some of these, er, “musical acts”… WAIL I AM SO STUCK IN MY HAPPY SUBURBAN BLISS… Oh well, whatev.

I like to run/walk/drag my limp lifeless (and chubby) body to Dave Matthews – he is the greatest EVER. Any CD really and any song. Maybe not the slower stuff but he has some rip roarin’ songs that make me pick up the pace. Oh and the Bare Naked Ladies and Amy Winehouse. Okay, so yeah I am probably dating myself for liking DMB and BNL… oh poor me.

Ha, zombies are out there as are ghosts and spirits – I believe. Ever watched The Haunting on Discovery, I think? OMG, I so believe in ghosts after weeks of watching that show during my lunch hour!

  68. Susie on May 9th, 2007 6:23 am

My first comment — woo, hoo! Your posts always make me laugh and having to be at work becomes a little more bearable.

I don’t run, but I do use an elliptical every day, which seriously kicks. my. ass. Here are some songs that help:

    Heartbreaker – Pat Benatar
    Barracuda – Heart
Rusty Cage (album: Badmotorfinger) – Soundgarden
Bright Yellow Gun – Throwing Muses
Tick (album: Fever to Tell) – Yeah Yeah Yeahs
oh, and pretty much anything by Rage Against the Machine

    Good luck with the running!

  69. stephanie brown on May 9th, 2007 6:35 am

reason #458 why i love the gym: elyptical machines allow you to run in place….which means i can close my eyes and find my zen place while my legs are turning into rubber bands….
see, i dont have an ipod (gasp!) so i’m just not as lucky as you.

OK i am a strict lurker but for this 1 instance I decided to be a tad social…
    1) Because of you and the internet as a whole i am now convinced that zombies in fact do exist, therefore not a paranoia; in fact you are learning valuable information in the event of a zombie onslot.
    2) i am not much of a runner, i do the eliptical and on occassion will torture myself with either a run out doors or worse the treadmill, but that is when i am being completely sadistic… but anyway 1 of my favorite workout songs in Cherry Lips – Garbage, it gets me moving, could be do to the fact that she sings “Go baby go go, we’re right behind you” over and over again makes me feel like i am being chased or something….
Anyway there you have it and i will go back to my usual anti-social lurking behavior now! Thank you :)

For songs? I always listen to Paul Weller. Love him. Especially Sunflower. However, From the Floorboards Up and Come on Let’s Go are good. The Jam’s Down at the Tube Station at Midnight.

And I always find INXS motivating. Maybe it’s just my belief that Michael Hutchense was so darn sexy…

I used to run to Shaker hymns. They made me feel virtuous and hard-working.

In other news, I am lame.

  80. Angela on May 9th, 2007 9:19 am

I like to jog to cheesy ’80s music. mostly. The beats are good and the nostalgia helps me ignore the pain I’m in. Some selections from my playlist:

    Dancing With Myself, Billy Idol
    Footloose, Kenny Loggins
Mysterious Ways, U2 (maybe that’s ’90s. yes, I think so)
Pepper, Butthole Surfers (may also be ’90s. It’s all a blur to me)
    Take On Me, A-ha
    Word Up, Cameo

Oh! I also have the cover of “Smooth Criminal” by Alien Ant Farm. Most excellent to jog to.

  81. Jaci on May 9th, 2007 9:33 am

“Hate To Say I Told You So” by The Hives. It’s a most excellent song to flee from zombies to.

  82. Bianca on May 9th, 2007 10:58 am

You know I tried to leave a comment yesterday and it didn’t post so I tried again and it said “it looks like that’s a repeated comment” or something and it STILL didn’t post. I’m kinda bummed because I spent so much time putting down songs that were good for faster, medium and cool down running.

I’ll narrow it down. I think the most important thing I said was “It’s not a running playlist without Missy Elliott”. I recommend: Lose Control, Pass that Dutch, Work It, Really Hot and Get Ur Freak On (also The Rain & Sock it To Me are good warm up songs). A lot of them have kinda video game-ish beats which makes me feel like I’m in one. I like that feeling. Who doesn’t want to be in a video game.

  83. sundry on May 9th, 2007 11:07 am

Crap, I’m sorry — some comments went into the spam bucket (NOOO!) for some stupid reason. I just went and unspammed them so hopefully they should show up now.

  84. Christina on May 9th, 2007 11:23 am

oh yeah and I am SOOO old (ha, if you consider 33 old…) I do not even own an iPod but I think about them often. Then I wonder when in the midst of work, cleaning, cooking, and taking care of four toddlers (you know the little boy, the husband and two dogs…) would I find time to take care of an iPod the way it ought to be…

  85. Pickles & Dimes on May 9th, 2007 11:26 am

I think my previous tries yesterday got spam-bucketed, so I’ll try again:

Holding out for a hero – Bonnie Tyler
SexyBack – Justin Timberlake (I can’t believe I’m admitting to this one)
    Light Fingered – Composure
    Hell Above Water – Curve
Hollaback Girl – Gwen Stefani (I can’t believe this one either; let’s just say I can only run to songs with a good beat)
All the things she said – t.A.T.u.
Send me an angel – Thrice
    Crystal Ship – X
Pure Reality – Popnuvo feat. :Lotus

  86. Bianca on May 9th, 2007 11:50 am

Oh and I just remembered! If Riley is ANYTHING like most toddlers I know, he will love to dance to the song Lose Control. My niece has actually learned to clap along during the pause in the music (and she’s 3). It’s adorable. Try it out when you guys have your next dancing session!

  87. Emblita on May 9th, 2007 12:04 pm

My favorite cardio workout song is ‘Scotty doesn’t know’ from the Eurotrip soundtrack…. its silly, but fun.

  89. Dvlshkitten on May 9th, 2007 1:43 pm

I would say anything by Prodigy or Korn or Tool during the running. While stumbling up the driveway or cooling down, I’d go with Imogen Heap or Circa Survive.

  90. virg on May 9th, 2007 2:23 pm

Anything by Seabound really gets me going. Oo oo, I also like to exercise to NIN “Pretty Hate Machine” or some depeche mode.

  91. taerna on May 9th, 2007 2:32 pm

first to comment on zombies: i went with a friend to hear david sedaris speak a few weeks ago (he’s even better in person than he is on paper) and he recommends a book at the end of every show. he recommended the zombie book! apparently david’s also completely distracted and generally paranoid about the possibility of a zombie attack. who knew?

as for songs, i have a playlist called “work it” and a handful of songs from that list:

let’s get retarded – black eyed peas
    senorita – justin timberlake
    walk away – kelly clarkson
shake your coconuts – junior senior (this one rocks my ass off – it’s got a great pace-setting beat)
bartender – hed p.e. (this one makes you want to beat the hell out of something)
get it poppin’ – fat joe featuring nelly
roda – regina ellis (from the be cool soundtrack – fun!)

I alternate walking and running, and I recommend some Motley Crue, Guns’n'Roses and Iron Maiden. Especially Run to the Hills.

PS – my favourite lolcat is the cat eating the birthday cake and then getting dragged away. “nom nom nom…noo, it are my birthday!”

  99. susan on May 9th, 2007 4:52 pm

the absolute best song i have on my workout playlist is “fighter” by christina aguilera. i’ve never been a huge fan of hers, but “fighter” is a-mazing when it comes to working out. i seriously feel like kicking some ass when i hear it; it pumps me up like no other…and quite unexpectedly!also, jamiroquia is pretty great for warming up or doing a semi-light workout.

  100. Holly on May 9th, 2007 4:53 pm

I’m glad that you had a zombie themed post today because I wanted to show you a link that was zombie-related and I didn’t want to do it on a really sweet entry about Riley or something.

Given that you’ve started working out again and are obsessed with zombies, when I read this yesterday, I immediately thought of you. Creepy? Maybe.

Ok, I am so late to the party on this, but here are some highlights from the playlist that got me through the marathon, plus some stuff I’ve added more recently. (I should note that several of these were suggested to me by Guinness Girl (www.redredwhine.com) when I sent out a similar plea for playlist help last fall.)

Move Along – All-American Rejects (this is a good one to start with and then add it again in the middle of the mix — great motivator)
    Misunderstood – Bon Jovi
Keep the Faith – Bon Jovi
Runaway – Bon Jovi (notice a theme? what can I say, they write rockin’ running songs…)
Chemicals React – Aly & AJ
Dirty Little Secret – All-American Rejects
    Mr. Brightside – The Killers
Read My Mind – The Killers (this song makes me giddy)
American – Neil Diamond (I am a geek)
Two Worlds Parted – John & Mary (I CANNOT STRESS THIS ONE ENOUGH. YOU MUST BUY IT IMMEDIATELY.)
    True Faith – New Order
You and I – Celine Dion (You and IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII/Were meant to flllyyyyyyyyy — seriously awesome running song – don’t laugh)
    Numb/Encore – Jay-Z/Linkin Park
    The Distance – Bon Jovi
Gotta Get Thru This – Daniel Bedingfield
    Corduroy – Pearl Jam
    Ceremony – New Order
Unconditional – The Bravery (one of the BEST running songs EVERRRRR!)
An Honest Mistake – The Bravery
Just Like Heaven – The Cure
Friday I’m in Love – The Cure
    Girlfriend – Avril Lavigne
Keep Holding On – Avril Lavigne
    Godspeed – BT
In the End – Linkin Park
    Boston – Augustana
Have a Nice Day – Bon Jovi
