Excuse me but I would like to make an announcement. Ahem.

THE BABY IS SMILING. REPEAT, WE HAVE ACTUAL NO-SHIT ON PURPOSE SMILING.

smile3_308.jpg

smile1_308.jpg

Also, pouting.

sadface_308.jpg

But the SMILING, good god. All of a sudden with the goony SMILING and the cooing sounds and the EYE CONTACT.

Am mushy. Cannot type. Too busy talking in a ridiculously high-pitched voice, doling out belly zerberts, nibbling baby toes, acting like a love-drunk fool, etc.

  2. Swistle on March 25th, 2008 8:43 am

OMG. It’s like a light switches on and suddenly somebody’s HOME in that previously automated baby body.

  3. annie on March 25th, 2008 8:44 am

Ahh… makes the bullshit endured thus far so much better doesn’t it? :-)

  4. sundry on March 25th, 2008 8:44 am
Swistle: god, I know, and it makes ALL THE DIFFERENCE IN THE WORLD.
  5. Sarah on March 25th, 2008 8:44 am

Aww, how exciting for you! I know you had just posted on this over at PD and now you’ve got it. Go enjoy and quit reading comments!! :)

Also, love the pouty face too.

  6. Gillian on March 25th, 2008 8:45 am

I loved it when my baby finally smiled because it was reassurance that HEY! You’re doing something Right!!!

  7. Eric's Mommy on March 25th, 2008 8:46 am

Oh my god, my teeth hurt! So cute!!!!

  8. Emily on March 25th, 2008 8:49 am

Goddammit. I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that I am not ready to have children, you post pictures like this, which make me want to go out and get randomly sperminated. Currently repeating to self over and over: am only 25 … am not ready …am only 25 … am not ready …

  9. Kirsten on March 25th, 2008 8:49 am

I have a 17 week old and he started smiling at 2 weeks old–no kidding! Compared to my daughter who looked suspicious of everything we did, he is a pleasure to care for almost solely for that reason. I have since come up with a theory that survival of the fittest also extends to babies –that in the cave days the smiling babies got fed more, cuddled more, and bugs picked off more. Agree?

  10. warcrygirl on March 25th, 2008 8:50 am

Awwww!!!! And Dylan looks 57% less suspicious than Riley at that age. That first smile just makes your heart sing, doesn’t it?

  11. Elisha on March 25th, 2008 8:58 am

    Yay!!

  12. Aunt Linda on March 25th, 2008 9:02 am

Hey, this is Stand In Baby, right? Where did Dylan go?

  13. mrsgryphon on March 25th, 2008 9:04 am

YAY! I vividly remember Bean’s first smiles, and I love that you’ve got such lovely photos of the moment!

Now, get back to zerberting and nibbling - a happy baby is waiting for you!

  14. ladyloo on March 25th, 2008 9:05 am

Awww. Wow! All of a sudden he totally looks like Riley!

  15. Elizabeth on March 25th, 2008 9:13 am

Holy goodnight, is he the cutest or what? The fuzzy little hairline is KILLING me.
I was also going to say that in these latest pictures he looks shockingly like Riley AND JB.

  16. Denise on March 25th, 2008 9:13 am

Aww, the smiles are adorable! But that pout??? Oh man, I would be giving him everything I could to try to make him happy again. It pulls at my heart.

  17. fairydogmother on March 25th, 2008 9:19 am

Aww, each of those photos is adorable. Especially that last one. But the one that melts my heart the most and kicks my ovaries into overdrive is the pout. That pout? It kills me with the adorableness of it all!

  18. RubiaLala on March 25th, 2008 9:20 am

Oh my goodness, he is just beautiful! What a precious face. I love his little lip quiver. Ahhhhhh, good therapy during the workday, thanks for sharing!

  19. kali on March 25th, 2008 9:24 am

omg, the pouting, lol, it is incredible.

  20. samantha jo campen on March 25th, 2008 9:25 am

Oh I’m so happy for you! Also? Thank you so much for posting this, because I am anxiously awaiting the 6-week mark so things can get a lot easier for me too! Three weeks to go, not that I’m counting.

    I love the pouting face.

  21. nonsoccermom on March 25th, 2008 9:25 am

Ahhh! Too eye-searingly precious! It really does make it all worthwhile, doesn’t it? My second is about 6 weeks older than Dylan, and I thought the exact same thing when she smiled for the first time. Yay for baby smiles!

  22. kalisah on March 25th, 2008 9:33 am

can’t say that I blame you. my god you make cute babies.

  23. Sara Moon on March 25th, 2008 9:44 am

    HOO RAY!!!!!!!!!
Enjoy every cute second of it.
    So happy for you!

  24. beach on March 25th, 2008 9:45 am

    that last picture…..mini JB!

  25. Jennifer on March 25th, 2008 9:53 am

Oh, I just love him and I’m so glad things have gotten better!

The pout is priceless. I wonder if babies have been masters of poking out their lower lips since caveman times or if we’ve just evolved that way over time. Cute and funny, either way!

  26. Sarah Lena on March 25th, 2008 9:55 am

This made my day. He is just too precious. The personality is now born. (This would be the “better” everyone tells you is coming.)

  27. Becky on March 25th, 2008 10:06 am

    YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  28. That Nervous Girl on March 25th, 2008 10:08 am

Well, he’s earning his keep now, isn’t he? Adorable! You always take such great pictures.

  29. Blythe on March 25th, 2008 10:32 am

    Delightful.
(Also, he looks just like JB in these pics. Sweet.)

  30. Someone Being Me on March 25th, 2008 10:44 am

Awww…Don’t fall for it. Thats how they sucker you in. He is adorable though.

  31. Janet on March 25th, 2008 10:46 am

What a beautiful smile Dylan has AND I love the blonde eyebrows! Too cute!

  32. vague on March 25th, 2008 10:47 am

Aww, so sweet! I am so glad for you!

  33. McWriter on March 25th, 2008 11:15 am

    Glee. Delight. Joy. Love.

Congrats, Linda. You certainly give your boys a lot to smile about!

  34. Caitlin on March 25th, 2008 11:28 am

I am doing the same thing.
    To my computer screen.
    At work.
    Is that weird?

PS - I will munch that little pout right off when I need a delicious snack because GOOD LORD that is just too much too handle.

  35. Moriah on March 25th, 2008 11:39 am

And what a smile it is!

  36. amber on March 25th, 2008 11:40 am

And what a cute smile it is! He looks so happy, even his eyeballs are smiling and all aglow. I heart your family.

  37. Jennifer on March 25th, 2008 11:42 am

Oh God! So cute! All of my developmental psych stuff is coming into play and all I can think is Piaget, what stage is this?

But seriously, he is adorable, even the pouting! Congrats!!

  38. Nancy on March 25th, 2008 12:01 pm

    Hooray!!

Dylan has got quite the peach fuzz going on — he looks like he’s going to be even blonder than Riley. Adorable! *smush*

  39. Angella on March 25th, 2008 12:51 pm

That is the BEST part. When they start morphing from Blobs to sweethearts.

    :)

  40. anna on March 25th, 2008 1:38 pm

Sooooo great! He is a cute lil’ thing!

  41. jen on March 25th, 2008 2:18 pm

awww. he looks JUST like riley in the pouting picture. haha.

  42. M.A. on March 25th, 2008 2:26 pm

I agree with LadyLoo and Jen (and probably others) — he looks JUST like Riley! I can’t wait for the first Christmas card — you in a just-right-festive frock, JB in a woolie sweater, dog with reindeer antlers, and Riley and Dylan in fetching (but never matching) Holiday outfits, scowling. Cat will be just out of eyesight on the mantle about to leap on all of you….

  43. Donna on March 25th, 2008 2:52 pm

Oh my god — the Riley Cuteness that I thought would never be surpassed? It’s just been matched.

  44. willikat on March 25th, 2008 2:59 pm

ahhhhhhhhhh! beyond cute!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i turned into a ball of mush too.

  45. Sassy on March 25th, 2008 3:02 pm

    Soooooo cute!

  46. donna on March 25th, 2008 3:12 pm

God the cuteness. I too would sell everything I own to buy something to make that pout go away!
And the smile? Could light up the world!

  47. Jessica on March 25th, 2008 4:20 pm

So cute! Hooray for baby smiles!

  48. Josh on March 25th, 2008 6:24 pm

I didn’t know babies had to learn to freaking smile. I don’t think I like babies very much. Is there some sort of pod I could put one in that would just kind of sit around holing a lamp or something until the baby was old enough to send it away fro school every day?

  49. Buckeye Mommy on March 25th, 2008 6:35 pm

My 14 mo son was on my lap while I was reading this and he LOVED the pictures of Dylan! He was smiling and pointing at each picture as I scrolled down. So I clicked on over to your Flickr page and just scrolled through the pictures. He was entertained by images of Dylan and Riley for a good 10 minutes. It was a welcome reprieve from the incessant whining that was the rest of his day. So, thanks for helping make us smile too!

  50. biscuit on March 25th, 2008 6:43 pm

When my 7.5 week old baby pouts I tell her a bird is going to poop on her lip.

She’s been cheesing since 3 weeks.

    http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j3/kellywmars/Maggie4-8weeks273.jpg

Makes me think I’m funny looking or something.

  51. Karen on March 25th, 2008 7:15 pm

There definitely is something to the whole 6 or 8 week magic, isn’t there? Hard to convince someone at the 2 week mark, but OH - isn’t it a delicious, fabulous relief?!!
    Enjoy. And yay.

    K

  52. Lesley on March 25th, 2008 11:16 pm

If I were going to build a Shakespearean theater, I’d place that pic of frowny Dylan on the left and the smiley last pic of D on the right. He is too cute for words. TOO CUTE!

  53. emily on March 26th, 2008 6:06 am

Sooo happy for you! He is just gorgeous!

  54. Andrea on March 26th, 2008 7:27 am

Best. feeling. ever. to have your kid smile at you for the first time. At least until they utter that first, “I love you, Mama.”

  55. Sara on March 26th, 2008 8:02 am

Dylan is ridiculously cute, which should be no surprise because Riley is also ridiculously cute, but still: RIDICULOUSLY CUTE. That smile totally made my morning.

  56. andi on March 26th, 2008 8:03 am

Ah, the transition from non-stop eating/crying/pooping/projectile vomiting machine to eye-contact-making/smiling/occasionally calm human being is one of my favorite parts of this crazy baby thing.

  57. dmb5_libra on March 26th, 2008 8:34 am

Ahhhhh! OMG! So cute. I want to eat him.

Just to let you know, my sister turned me on to your blog in July 2007. So much so, that I had to read it all the way from the very beginning. It was like a cram session. I read on the subway, in the car, in the elevator, during lunch, during work, etc. I finally caught up and I LOVE YOUR BLOG.

  58. Chris on March 26th, 2008 9:29 am

and that right there is what makes it all worthwhile.

also, I’ve said it from the moment he hit the atmosphere, but dammit if he doesn’t look just like Riley and his Daddy. I can’t wait for the first picture of the boys together, both with that furrowed brow worry face.

  59. Julie on March 26th, 2008 12:38 pm

    OMG…love those pictures!

  60. pam on March 26th, 2008 2:00 pm

my three wee ones just started doing it too, and it kills me. the grins, the pouts, and the chin quivers. happy sigh…

  61. banana on March 26th, 2008 2:59 pm

He looks SO MUCH like JB.

    Also, you make cute babies.

  62. Alyson on March 26th, 2008 5:26 pm

    Baby making pretty baby faces!

Almost makes me want another one…….at 46…….ah……NOPE!

I’ll volunteer to babysit, however - too young to do the grandma thing - YET! (you hear that sons-o-mine?)

  63. Ashlea on March 26th, 2008 7:56 pm

Congrats on the smiles (even though they don’t look like smiles to my 21 year old “I don’t ever want children” fiery eyes). Glad that it finally seems like the give give give factor is beginning to reverse as he starts to give smiles.

..I really wanted to comment on the latest flicker picture of Cat but seeing as I don’t have a flicker account… I’ll say it here.

“Hmmm.. My astronomy professor would be most fascinating by this relatively local black hole that seems to have taken residence in Washington..”

  64. Rebecca on March 27th, 2008 12:15 am

Finally a payoff for what feels like years of indentured servitude! Congrats!

Reading about being a new parent again brings back the memories of mine when she was new. It’s only been 4 1/2 years and I only remember being vaguely tired and the utter happiness of this stage where you are the center of their emotional universe.

These are the moments that you will remember.
