This morning, driving to school:

Riley: “Why’s that guy going?”

Me: “Hm? What guy?”

Riley: “The guy in the song.”

I listen: Quasi is playing on KEXP, singing “I’m never coming back again, I’m never coming back again. You can’t close that door for forevermore, I’m never coming back again.”

Me: “I’m not sure, sweetie.”

Riley: “You’re not going, are you?”

Me: “What? Me? No, of course not.”

Riley: “And Daddy’s not going?”

Me: “No, no. This is just a song. Someone else wrote it.”

Riley: “You’re going to stay forever, right?”

Me: “Well. I’m going to be around for a long, long time.”

Riley: “And you and Daddy aren’t ever going to do like in the song.”

Me: “No, no. We would never leave you, ever. Never in a million years. We’re a family, right?”

Riley: “Yeah.”

Me: “And we stick together, right?”

Riley: “Right.”

Me: “Is there a reason you think we might leave?”

Riley: “No . . . it’s just that this song is kind of a sad song.”

Me: “Should we listen to a different song?”

Dylan: “PLAY RO MA MA? PLAY RO MA MA?”

Me: “Lady Gaga it is. Hey Riley?”

Riley: “What?”

Me: “I love you.”

Riley: “I love you too.”

    Oh Linda. Wow.

And that picture? IS YOUR FACE.

  2. Eric's Mommy on May 13th, 2010 10:32 am

    So sweet.

Riley looks just like you in that picture.

Eric loves Bad Romance too, I had to put it on my iPod for him.

  3. Jinxi on May 13th, 2010 10:33 am

    Awwww…priceless!

  4. Emily on May 13th, 2010 10:36 am

Holy hell that’s the most adorable thing I’ve heard in a long long time. You are all too precious for words.

And I love that “RO MA MA” is Lady Gaga.

  5. Cara on May 13th, 2010 10:38 am

Wow – its always startling (and humbling) to realize what close attention kids pay. And, he’s right, that is kind of a sad song.

  6. Kate on May 13th, 2010 10:39 am

So sweet. Sometimes we all just need a little reassurance.

  7. kalisa on May 13th, 2010 10:40 am

Your kid? Is like a thousand years old.

  8. Jennifer on May 13th, 2010 10:41 am

That little puddle over there? Yes, that’s my heart. It just melted over reading that story.

  9. Jane on May 13th, 2010 10:46 am

Your sweet baby looks just like you .. what a little man he is!

  10. Wendy on May 13th, 2010 10:47 am

Sometimes, when I read things like that, I want to figure out a way to build an ever growing snuggli type device so I can carry my boy with me forever.

Obviously that is totally developmentally wrong and would wreck my back and is just weird, but sometimes…

  11. marilyn on May 13th, 2010 10:58 am

Annnnnd now I can’t stop crying. This is unbearably sweet.

  12. Saw on May 13th, 2010 11:02 am

It’s so sweet of Riley to make note of the song and worry about his family.
I’ve been reading your blog for a while now and every time I read, you could always somehow in someway in some words make me laugh. But this time, I almost cried after finished reading this. It totally made my heart melt.

  13. lisa on May 13th, 2010 11:09 am

oh my god, he is too precious.

  14. SJ on May 13th, 2010 11:32 am

  15. Kristen on May 13th, 2010 11:33 am

Your kids make me want to have kids. Good thing too, since one is coming out in about a month.
Confidential to Dylan- Don’t be embarrassed about this Lady Gaga thing later on in life. We all love her, even if we deny it.

  16. Lucy on May 13th, 2010 12:05 pm

    Oh that’s so lovely!

  17. Kelley on May 13th, 2010 12:21 pm

    ~ melt ~

  18. MyFrogs on May 13th, 2010 12:31 pm

The kids love the Gaga! A friend told me yesterday her son wanted to listen to the “burger face” song, poker face! Haha

  19. willikat on May 13th, 2010 12:33 pm

He is such a sweet, sensitive little boy. What a man he is going to become.

  20. Kami on May 13th, 2010 12:35 pm

    He is so sweet, seriously.

  21. Christine on May 13th, 2010 12:45 pm

Ack so sweet. I can’t believe they’ve gone and got so big… Dylan slays me.

  22. Kirsten on May 13th, 2010 12:45 pm

And then your heart burst out of your chest and exploded into a million peices right? SIGH

  23. ElizabethZ on May 13th, 2010 12:50 pm

What a great shot of Riley – so cute. And not a suspicious wrinkled brow to be found!

  24. MichelleH on May 13th, 2010 1:05 pm

Aw, he is so sweet. When I was Riley’s age I used to cry whenever I heard “The Long and Winding Road”….something about “Don’t leave me waiting here…”

Those little ones are so fearless and so fragile all at once. My goodness what an awesome responsibility. So rewarding though..

Props to Dylan for lightening the mood with a little Lady Gaga :)

  25. Kathryn on May 13th, 2010 1:11 pm

I tell my 19 month old “I love you” because I do and because I love to hear him say it back to me.

  26. Amy on May 13th, 2010 1:15 pm

Wow. He looks so much like you in that picture.

  27. sheilah on May 13th, 2010 1:16 pm

    Awww…*sniff* got a tear in my eye…sweet little boy…

  28. McKenna on May 13th, 2010 1:31 pm

    “Like” ;)

  29. Anais on May 13th, 2010 2:15 pm

Your kids are just precious. Riley is very intelligent- how he actually listens to the lyrics of songs and understands them! I’ve never known a child as young as he is do that.

And Dylan loves Lady Gaga- how cute!!!

You’re so lucky, Linda. You’re a great mom, and your kids are fantastic.

  30. Rachel on May 13th, 2010 2:44 pm

That is both very sweet and kind of sad. Poor kids, they are growing up in a tough world where people- kids!- are experiencing heartbreak and loss all the time. I’m so glad your little boys can grow up in a family that loves each other :)

  31. lindsayc on May 13th, 2010 3:36 pm

My two year old loves Gaga – asks for her daily. Could be worse I figure :-).

  32. Anna on May 13th, 2010 4:50 pm

    Cute.

What is it with toddlers and Lady Gaga??!!?

My one knows ALL and I mean all the words to Bad Romance….

  33. Belle on May 13th, 2010 5:35 pm

Oh, man, this was beautiful to read. And it had to be more beautiful to have actually experienced it. That’s gonna be one of those memories that will always stay with you, no matter how old he gets.

  34. Claire on May 13th, 2010 5:48 pm

Awwww. It’s crazy what kids can pick up on, even when you don’t think they’re paying attention.

  35. Ashley on May 13th, 2010 6:07 pm

What an awesome little dude :)
And he looks JUST like you in that picture!

  36. Danell on May 13th, 2010 6:14 pm

So sweet. And Riley is, as always, movie-star adorable.

  37. Sonia on May 13th, 2010 6:22 pm

    *Poof!* My heart just exploded.

  38. Ashleas on May 13th, 2010 6:25 pm

Isn’t it amazing how kids can look like BOTH parents. When Riley’s not smiling and being suspicious, I see JB. When he’s all smiles, it’s ALL you. …I guess this means we can blame JB for his suspicious-ness. ness.

  39. jonniker on May 13th, 2010 6:56 pm

    Oh Linda.

  40. All Adither on May 13th, 2010 9:17 pm

My kids like Bad Romance too. And, alarmingly, I can’t get it out of my own head.

  41. gertie on May 13th, 2010 9:29 pm

Oh wow. I swear I’ve had this exact same conversation. I think I have the female versions of your children.

  42. Lesley on May 13th, 2010 9:34 pm

    Gulp.

Excuse me, I have to dry my eyes.

  43. Donna on May 13th, 2010 10:27 pm

I swear I couldn’t love your kids any more if they were my own.
Oh, Riley. If there were only a way to bottle that sweetness and keep it forever.
How did you drive after that? I wouldn’t have been able to see…..

  44. Zoe on May 14th, 2010 1:39 am

Now that was just the sweetest… :)

  45. Kaitlyn on May 14th, 2010 3:56 am

What a sweet boy. But their fears of being abandoned are heartbreaking, aren’t they?

  46. cakeburnette on May 14th, 2010 4:15 am

The Riley story is very sweet, but I can’t stop laughing over the fact your BABY LOVES GAGA! Sounds like something my kids did at that age. :) I have a friend who’s 3 y/o’s favorite song was “My Humps”–LOL

  47. Andrea (@shutterbitch) on May 14th, 2010 6:19 am

That’s so sweet! Must be in the air because I had a similar conversation with my son yesterday, too.

    Love that Dylan loves Gaga.

  48. Redbecca on May 14th, 2010 6:33 am

    Awwww…..adorable picture, too!

  49. KKF on May 14th, 2010 7:43 am

    Best.
    Rileypic.
    Evarrrr!

  50. Melissa on May 14th, 2010 8:36 am

This was perfect. Thanks for sharing, Linda.

  51. Sara on May 14th, 2010 11:20 am

    Best. Conversation. Ever.

  52. wordygirl on May 14th, 2010 11:39 am

Oh, that picture. When did he become a BOY and not a baby? And such a sweet, smart, and sensitive one, too. What a treasure!

  53. Amy on May 14th, 2010 2:05 pm

    Awwww…little boys are so sweet!

  54. amber on May 14th, 2010 4:07 pm

If it’s possible he gets cuter (and looks more like you) ever time you post a photo. SIGH.

  55. jwoap on May 14th, 2010 5:46 pm

*smile* you have amazing children and you are an amazing mom. And before you get all “oh gosh” on me. Just stop for a second and be still with your wise mind, take in the compliment, feel good about it and go on with your day:)

  56. JAB on May 14th, 2010 6:29 pm

Print this post out and put it in his baby book so you can remember it always…this is so, so sweet.

  57. Heather on May 14th, 2010 6:31 pm

That picture is your face. Ditto #1.

  58. Erika on May 15th, 2010 12:36 pm

My 5 year old son told me that he doesn’t want all the “big people” to go to heaven before him. He wants us to wait on him but he knows we can’t because then we would be “WAY TOO OLD”. I love him to pieces.

  59. Jaimie on May 15th, 2010 5:02 pm

    best conversation EVER!

  60. kristi on May 16th, 2010 5:15 am

Beautiful, beautiful boy. Inside and out.

  61. pixielation on May 16th, 2010 2:57 pm

My kids are constantly asking what some random person walking down the street with a pineapple on his head is doing – like I’d know.

    (I lied about the pineapple)

    Lovely photo too!

  62. Amanda on May 17th, 2010 10:49 am

Serrated, man, serrated freaking knife to the soul.

  63. Stacy on May 17th, 2010 1:15 pm

Okay, Riley is your spitting image in that photo! Such a cutie.

  64. beccado on May 18th, 2010 6:23 pm

love that story–it brought tears to my eyes. I hope I’ll have a special Lady Gaga moment with my little boy some day ;-)
