Goodbye vacation and sick time. Goodbye free massages, computers, and meals. Goodbye quiet office to myself and uninterrupted hours to get my work done. Goodbye friends and coworkers, hallway conversations, funny emails. Goodbye stability.
Goodbye soul-sucking commute. Goodbye not seeing my kids for eight hours a day. Goodbye unrewarding paychecks, not giving a shit, and giving too much of a shit. Goodbye job that stopped being right for me a few years ago, and started being actively wrong for me six months ago.
Yesterday I said goodbye to Workplace. Today I am officially a self-employed freelance writer who works from home.
Hello to dreams coming true.

Proud of you, babe.
You can do this. It won’t be easy, but you can. And you will. Keep your head high.
Awesome! Congratulations.
Congratulations! That is amazing news.
Wow! Congratulations!
Congratulations!!! so so happy for you!!
Wowee! What a brilliant leap for you. Have fun with it.
CONGRATS! I made the leap in March. My co-worker asked me how I was feeling (i was pregnant and really sick at the time) and I said “liberated”.
Also, now that you don’t work there, i won’t buy their uber expensive iphone app. LOL.
Congratulations! Terrifying, isn’t it? :D You’ll do great!
YOU GO, GIRL!
Wow! Congratulations! I’m so excited for you. I’m also excited to read the book you will now be free to write. Right? :)
Congratulations.
So proud of you!
Wow! You did it. YOU did it!
Way to take that leap! Congratulations!
Congratulations!
wow! congratulations!
Congratulations!! What an exciting step for you and your family.
I’ve already told you how excited I am for you, but reading this gave me the stupid grin. GO LINDA!
Holy goosebumps!
That is awesome though I am a bit sad (totally self serving.) One of the reasons I started reading your blog is that we had something common that I could relate too. A work away from home parent when so many do not work or work at home which is not a choice for me. It is a different life and I know it will be good and CONGRATS!
Wow! All the best to you.
Biggest hugest congrats to you. I would love to do the same! Okay, well just the goodbye part – I have no skills to write from home!
So proud of you. So inspired by you.
Holy cow! Congrats!
Congratulations! That is AMAZING.
Congrats! So proud of you…what an adventure! :)
WOOOOOOO!
Congrats!
Congratulations! So excited for you!
How thrilling! Congratulations!
Congrats! Can’t wait to read more about your adventures.
I’m totally inspired. I’m going to do this when baby #2 gets here. Good luck and congratulations.
Yes yes yes! As cool as Workplace was in some ways, I am SO happy for you to be saying sayonara to that endless daily commute. It’s just WRONG to have to do that so much, and pay gas money for the privilege. I know self-motivation and setting your own schedule in utter freedom can be tricky to navigate sometimes, but 1) you ran a mother-effing marathon, so you know you have that kind of determination to push yourself and do anything, and 2) FREEDOM! GO YOU.
Congratulations, Linda!! That’s great news!
Congratulations!
Wahoo! Proud of you!
Congrats!
Good for you! I’m a freelance writer too, and it’s the best thing I ever did. 10 years ago this year, and I don’t think I could ever go back to working for The Man.
Fantastic!
Congratulations! Cheers to taking active steps toward the future you want.
I did this exact thing a couple of years ago. I have never looked back. A couple of small changes in the budget (ok maybe 1) and it’s all good. I highly doubt you will ever regret this. Good luck. More blog posts now right? Yours is one of my all time favs.
YEA!
Congratulations and here’s to freedom, success and going after your dreams. You are ACTIVELY living your life, and pursuing what you want – becoming who you want to be and it’s freaking awesome! So many people stay, and they are stagnant and discontent….you,,,you are living. Can’t wait to read more.
Congratulations, lady. I’m so happy for you.
All the best with the transition!
ROCK. ON. Congrats! That is so, so fantastic!
You’re amazing us with all these brave life decisions! KEEP GOING. How awesome.
Oh awesome!! I don’t comment here often, but I read pretty much everything you write. I’m so excited for you!! This is something I hope to be able to do myself someday. It’s so inspiring to see you making it happen! Reminds me it’s still possible!
I don’t say this often but…
YOU GO, GIRL.
Congratulations!
We’ve been started to think about that dream in our house too. Hope your dream is full of amazing blessings and adventures! so very very happy for you
Congrats! That’s every kind of awesome.
Linda, you’re an inspiration. I love everything you write. Congratulations and good luck!
Huge! Congratulations to you and your family for finding the right path.
Wow – Congratulations!!
You are really an inspiration!
Wow! Many congratulations to you. Now can you *finally* write that book we’ve all wanted to buy and read for the last 5+ years?
So exciting to read this knowing how badly you’ve wanted it. Congratulations on taking the leap!
GO YOU! Wishing you all the best.
GOOD FOR YOU!! I can all too well relate to the time sucking commute and the endless hours away from the kids working for the Man, and I have to say – I’m so proud of you for making your escape!!! It can be done! Maybe someday, SOMEDAY I can follow suit! Congrats!
YIPPEE!!!! Good for you.
congrat-u-freaking-lations!!!
i’m so jealous. i’m not a good writer like you but i sincerely envy having a talent where you can still earn income and stay home with your children. i’m brainstorming everyday so that one day i may be able to raise my kids and pay the mortgage.
Congratulations!!!
WOOOO! You did it! That is so so awesome- best of luck with what comes next!
Good for you!!! Now get to writing that book…..pretty please?
Wow, congratulations!!!! Scary…but so awesome.
Did you beat the shit out of a fax machine in a field after you left? Wait, don’t tell me. I’m just going to imagine that you did. Rock on!
Wow, good for you, chasing down what you want! Yay!!
Good for you! It takes courage to pursue your dreams and to make your life look how you want it to look. I’m inspired by you!
Congratulations and “Helllllooooo, Yoga Pants!” This, coming from a semi-experienced work-at-homer who may (or may not) have been wearing her own comfy clothes for the past 4 months. :)
Best of luck on your new line of work. So happy for you!
You’ve got balls! Congratulations to you and your family.
I heard a saying once: “Sometimes you have to go out on a limb to reach the fruit.”
Congrats to you for going out there.
Congratulations!!! We are all rooting for you.
Congratulations. I did the same thing five years ago and although it hasn’t always been easy, I have not regretted it at all. Welcome to the world of pants free workdays!!
Go out and celebrate with several new pairs of PJs–your new work wardrobe! It is bliss, my friend. BLISS! (Even though the mail carrier will assume you are a lushbag when you pad out in your slippers to relieve him of your haul… it is still and always bliss!)
If this was facebook, I would “like” this post
I admire you for having the bravery to follow your heart.
I just got the chills! I am so happy for you Linda and look forward to all of your upcoming adventures! You are taking life by the balls lady!
The only way this could be better news is if it was me doing it. Go you.
I teared up a little reading this. Congratulations! I can’t tell you how much I admire your drive.
I literally gasped! Good for you! Oh my God, so exciting.
Congratulations!
Woohoo!!!! You inspire me.
SWEET! Time to write a book now??!!
Congratulations, Linda!!
Woo hoo!

Congrats! Way to take control of your life for you and your family! So excited to see what’s to come.
Oh yay. Do what makes you happy and the rest will come…
Holy cow! Congratulations! Brass balls, indeed. Raising my cup of coffee to you this morning!
Oh, well done! I’m so excited for your new life.
You are an inspiration! Congratulations, Linda!
Yay! Does this mean more writting from you that I can read to get me through my ridiculously long and annoying day at work?
So incredibly KICK ASS. Congratulations, Linda!
That’s amazing :) So, so happy for you.
That’s freaking awesome. Congrats!
Fantastic! Anything that gives us more writing from you.
Way to go, lady!
I’ve read your writing all over the Internet, even that scarypants parenting site (and I don’t even have kids). You have real talent, and I know of what I speak: I’m an editor for at a publishing company. You’ll do great things, woman.
Congratulations!
Fantastic news! So pleased for you. Congratulations!
Mazel tov! I hope it is the beginning of wonderful things for you and your family.
Congratulations! I hope it’s as wonderful as can be!
Wow, Linda, just WOW!! I’m so excited to hear about your next steps and be able to sit shotgun (so to speak) as you guys chase down your dreams. Such an awesome opportunity. You continue to inspire! Good luck!!
You inspired the hell out of me when you enrolled in school. It’s really amazing to watch you. I’d wish you good luck but you don’t even need it. Congrats!
Yeah! Congratulations; so happy for you.
What the hell were you thinking?!?!? Have you fallen on your head?
Sorry… too many positive happy squee/ love comments. I had to.
You my dear….. will be fine.
man, it must feel good to be a gangsta.
AWESOME!!!!!!!!! I’m sure it’s a little scary but you will make it work and will be a million times happier. Not to mention, the commute alone! So happy for you!
Wishing you the Best of luck!
So happy for you and looking forwarding to reading lots more from you.
Yay! So happy for you!!
I quit my job 5 years ago to be a freelance photographer/designer/teacher and I have never regretted it. I know you won’t either. Best of luck with everything!!
I love hearing about people who take charge of their lives! It is inspiring!
:-D All the best for you and your family!!
can i tell you that i cried a little for you the other night when you were stuck in traffic on the way home on riley’s birthday. (via twitter)
and i just cried a little for you right now.
so excited for you & your family.
Oh my god, I’m so happy for you.
Your kids will thank you for this someday. You can never get this time back with them. Best thing I ever did was quit to stay home with my son. Now that he’s in middle school, I’m back to the grind, but I wouldn’t trade a paycheck for what I got out of the time at home.
The world is your oyster, now go make me some smoked ones, with brie please.
I am so happy for you. Yay you!
That is great news Linda. I’m looking forward to more of your excellent writing. I think you have it in you to do great things.
Congratulations, Linda!
Awesome. Congratulations!
good for you linda!!!!!! i love that you are bold enough to take a risk and go for your dreams!
YOU DID IT! YAY!!!
Yay! Yay! Yay!
Way to go Linda, I am so proud of you!!
Congratulations! Go, you!
“Uh yeah, Hi Sundry, Bill Lumbergh here. Uh yeah, ah, I almost forgot in your exit interview…I’m also going to need you to go ahead and come in on Sunday, too. We, uhhh, lost some people this week and we sorta need to play catch-up. Mmmmmkay? Thaaaaaanks. Call me back.
This may be my very first comment on your blog since I started reading you ages ago…..WHAHOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So, so liberating. I quit my job after my son was born, and I found the only things that I missed were reading on the train on the way to/from work and getting dressed up. Eight months into this new life, I’ve found new opportunities opening up that are far more fulfilling than the previous corporate grind. Can’t wait to hear about yours. Congrats!
Get out there and bust a nut girl. I am so proud of you!!! Wonderful things will come from your courage. What a gift you have given yourself and your family.
Wow! This is exciting news. I’m thrilled that you did it. Gives hope for those of us who are still in the ‘dreaming about it’ phase.
Ecstatic for you. Truly. Ever since I discovered your wonderful blog, I’ve been voting you Most Likely to Succeed in my head. Can’t wait to see what you do next.
Way to go!You are a true inspiration.
Now can you offer any advice to a writer/editor who just had a baby who hopes to freelance?
Seriously. I have no idea how to break into this world without falling prey to the scams.
And I don’t know if I can mentally handle going back to my soul-sucking job in order to pay for leaving my little guy in daycare.
I was a brand new person the day I quit a job that stopped being right for me. Way to go! I hope you find the same relief.
Go you! Congratulations!
Wow. And yay! Good luck with the next chapter.
WOW, congrats!!
Yay! Congratulations!!
Congratulations
Hooray! Congratulations and good luck.
Damn it must feel good……

Yay for you! What a great step. You must feel like a million bucks. You inspire me!
Wow! Have been waiting to see if you would do this. I’m a little envious (even though I love my job). Looking forward to reading about your and your family’s new adventures.
Big hairy balls of steel, and I am so proud of you. You inspire the HELL out of me. Can’t wait to see where these dreams take you.
WOW!!! I never say this, but: YOU GO GIRL!
Holy Crap! Congrats-does it feel like a weight has been lifted off your shoulders?
congrats! Not so sound overly cheesy, but you are such an inspiration for me.
I hope I get to write the same post one day. Hopefully one day soon!
Woo hoo! Congratulations and all the best for much success!!
Holy shit, good for you!
Congratulations! That’s wonderful and a HUGE, brave step to take.
YAY! So happy for you! Congratulations! It has been so amazing following your journey over the past couple of years. You are such an inspiration! You will be successful at anything you do. Congrats again!
CONGRATULATIONS! I am sure you will find it to be better than you thought it could be. Best of luck.
Yes, Yes, a thousand times YES!
Wonderful! Keep a’ going!
Congrats! You are brave and I am totally jealous.
Congratulations, lady! Freelancing is hard, but the rewards are worth it!
OMG! Freakin’ fanstatic! May your dreams come true!!!
Wow, I kind of teared up a bit (reading this sitting in my “not really right for me”/soul sucking job). That’s weird right? I mean I don’t know you, but I feel really proud of/for you.
Your bravery is inspiring, again.
Congrats to you for setting a goal and making it come true! Good luck in your new endeavor.
You inspire me!
SO happy for you!!! that is just fantastic news! Best of luck!!
I’ll add to the chorus & say: good for you!!
Awesome!!
I do this! And it is worth it, to me. Way worth it. I only do part-time, so I don’t know how it will be full-time with kids — I haven’t done full time since before Sam was born.
The hardest part for me is shutting down at the end of it all. Like, there are NO work boundaries at all, so sometimes I’m getting stuff done when Sam could really use my attention, and sometimes I skip out on sleep.
And sometimes I have no work at all, so I’m feeling like a total waste. But it all evens out, and for me, it was worth it.
I’m sure it will be for you, too. Congratulations!
Holy shit woman, rock on!
Delurking to say congrats on taking the leap! That is so awesome.
Holy shit, this is huge. Inspiring as always, Linda… I’m grateful to have found your corner of the internet!
I have so much respect for people who don’t let fear make their choices for them. Congratulations! I’m so excited for you and your family.
So it’s been said approx. 200 times before I got to my comment but here goes anyway: Fucking CONGRATS dude. I have a feeling you’ll never forget the breathless freedom you feel today.
Brave and true of you. Make you a deal: you keep writing and I’ll buy whatever you put out there. Congratulations.
Rock on!
I knew it was just a matter of time…. way to GO, girl!! You’re going to love this new rollercoaster, wherever it ends up taking you. YOU are in control now!
Congratulations! That must have been the best feeling ever. Can’t wait to see where this takes you…
Congrats! Best of luck to you. Can’t wait to read all about your new adventures.
Congrats! I can’t think of anyone better suited to succeed as a freelance writer. Keep us posted!
You will always, always, remember that this decision was the starting point living the life you wanted. You’ve got gonads a lot of us envy and your support system for handling them (JB, a ball-handler!) couldn’t be better.
You stinkin’ ROCK, Linda!
That is too cool! I am happy for you. Yay for having the ovaries to follow your dream.
(…since I’m pretty sure you don’t have balls…except the bouncy kind, of course…)
I’m so happy for you. The day I quit my job to freelance from home was honestly happier than my wedding day. (Sorry, husband.) I’d never felt as liberated and excited and… momentous.
This makes me happy, dude. Like really truly happy.
Congratulations! This is so awesome. Yes, let us know where you’re writing (and what we can buy!) so we can support you in every way possible!!!
YES!! That is awesome! Congratulations!
Congratulations!
Hey! I was just reading my latest issue of Parenting mag and who is the first featured blogger. :-) I felt so ‘in the know’ what with you being in my Reader and all…
Congrats on the new career. You’ll be brilliant.

Takes guts to follow your instincts and your dreams. And no guts, no glory!
Can’t wait to hear about your new adventures!
Goosebumps. This makes me feel like I do when I watch acrobats performing miraculous feats. Congratulations!
Squee!!!
congrats!! you rock!
Congratulations on making the leap! I can’t even imagine how good it must feel.
What an incredible thing you’re doing: changing your life instead of just bitching about it. You are amazing me today. Way to fucking go, Linda.
you’re awesome. that is all. :)
Congratulations!
Congratulations!!! This goodbye sounds like a great big door opening for you!! Best of luck!
Congratulations! So glad to hear it!!!!
I’m so happy for you! And envious and nervous and everything else all at the same time, but YAY! and congratulations! This is awesome!
Congratulations! I’m so happy for you. I gave up my job in July to be home with my 2 year old son and have never been happier.
I’m wallowing in my version of your second paragraph right now…
Congratulations on making the leap!
Good for you! I’m sure you’ll be a fantastic freelancer.
Each step you take toward your dreams is so inspiring.
Thanks for sharing it all with us.
Congratulations!
I’m so happy for you and your family. My tiny family (my 5 year old daughter and myself) are trying to see our Oregon dream to fruition as well! Maybe we’ll see you there!
Congratulations! I am so happy and proud of you. It’s such a big jump. You are ten kinds of awesome lady. Rock on with your bad self. :)

OH EM GEE!
Dude, you guys are an inspiration.
I look forward to reading more about your adventures as you hurl yourselves off the cliff of Merely Surviving and into the wild blue yonder of Really Living.
Wow! That is phenomenal!! I am so proud of you and so excited to see what this new venture brings.
I have to say, the way that you continually work to better your self and your life (when you were already damn awesome to begin with) is truly inspiring.
I got teary when I read this entry. Thank you for always reminding the rest of us that we are the masters of our own destinies.
Congrats! An exciting new change! So brave of you to take the leap…
Holy crap!! Good for you!! I hope this is just the first of the Big Decisions that fall into place for you and your family as you make your Big Moves. Inspiring!
“Leap and a net will appear” – Zen saying
The above quote constantly reminds me that sometimes it’s okay to take the plunge; that everything will work out.
Congratulations and good luck making those dreams come true!!
How totally awesome! I am constantly amazed at what incredible writing you produce on a “part-time” basis. I can’t wait to see what full-time looks like. Congratulations Linda!!! You are (again) an inspiration; for your brilliance, your humor, your tenacity and your moxie! I stand in awe…
Ok, first you go back to school and then you quit your soul sucking job while I still sit here too scared to move. JEALOUS!
AAAA! Congratulations on a huge decision…
Good for you!! Way to take a leap – it’s not easy. But, as “they” say – nothing worth having/doing is. Good luck!
HELL YEAH! Congrats!
Oh, congrats. It’s a fabulous scary thing!
Congrats on being so brave! You and JB are just the dream doers. Amazing.

amazing and inspiring Linda! don’t look back and don’t let the door hit ya where the good lord split ya.
Congratulations Linda. Hope my husband doesn’t find this post cause he’ll ban me from reading you.
Now you’re really going to have to go to that block party so you actually have face to face adult conversations with people other than the AF delivery guy.
All the best.
WOO WOO WOO!!! Congrats!
I am so very proud of you, Linda. You are brave, intelligent and such a wonderful inspiration. I am cheering for you all the way!
Congrats. And also, I will be waiting for the instructional post telling the rest of us HOW to become work from home freelance writers. :)
Signed,
Stuck in Corporate Comm

OMG! I AM SO PROUD OF YOU!!
Best feeling EVER, amirite???
Uh.. yeah… Bill Lumbergh here. I thought I would just call again and remind you that the workday starts at 8am today not 9am. Yeah. Alrighty then we will be seeing you soon then. I’m gonna need those TPS reports as soon as you get them collated. If you could really get a rush on those that would be great. Thanks.
I’m rooting for you! You’ll do great and I’m in such awe and respect of you (can you be “in respect of” someone?) for taking these (calculated) risks and doing what feels right for you and your family. Rock on Linda, you are an inspiration!
Congratulations, Linda! Life’s just too damn short to play it safe.
Best wishes!

Fuck yeah!
Woah. Congrats.
I’ve been reading you, first at diaryland then here, for at least six years now. I have to say, if anyone should be able to make a living writing, you should.
Ahhh!! How cool!
I, too, would love to see a list of all the websites/publications to which you contribute!
I am so happy for you — and us — that you are doing what you do best: write, and being a Mom. Enjoy the ride, Linda. WE will. Hogs and thistles from Michigan.
Congratulations!
You are growing so fast.
I love it.
Congratulations on taking this huge step. I’m a little disturbed that I don’t know and when I read this post, my eyes teared up with happiness for you and your family. I hope that doesn’t freak you out.
So incredibly inspiring. And I’m so excited to be along for the ride!
WOW!!! Awesome! You go girl!
Congrats!! You are such an inspiration. Way to seek out the life you aspire.
How exciting and scary and INSPIRING! Congratulations!! Definitely good riddance to not seeing your kids for 8 hours a day!!! All the very best!!!
Holy shit, Linda. That is awesome.
This made me tear up. GOOD FOR YOU. I for one will immediately buy your book if you write one.
I don’t know you, but I am proud of you.
dude. congrats. that is huge.
Wow!! I’m so excited and happy for you. Congratulations! :) kim
You did it!!!!! Man, do I love your take-charge, take-no-prisoners life kickassery. Consider me another person cheering you along on the sidelines!
I don’t comment often, but I read all the time. I just wanted to add to the long list of very well deserved Congratulations!!! You are a very inspiring woman, thank you for putting your voice into the world!
Go Linda!! Congratulations, I knew the day would come:)
Every time you blog about a new milestone, I start to write you a gushy comment, but always get embarrassed and delete.
I forget how I first came across your blog, but I remember getting hooked and reading your entire archive one winter weekend while I was pregnant with my first son. (Three years ago now…time flies.)
You were always a good writer and a sharp wit, but your personal evolution has been amazing. How do you set all these awesome goals and keep knocking ‘em out? You’re an inspiration.
So now, freelancer…a book of your life story?
Their loss, your gain.
Think of the money you’ll save on gas.
Working from home rocks.
Congratulations Linda. Wishing you all the best for your new venture and new way of living! Here’s to more changes (location this time) soon!
Holy crap! Congrats! Long commutes are a bitch–so happy for you that you don’t have to worry about that anymore.
Well done, you brave girl. I wish you the very best of luck as you travel your new path!
WOW!!! That must be the scariest thing to do – but well done on doing it.
Jumping up and down for you! Congratulations, on taking this step, and on having the courage and self-confidence needed.
well done you!
That’s amazing — congratulations!!
Congrats & best wishes! It’ll be a helluva change, but definitely worth going for!
*Thumbs up* Awesomesauce. Welcome to the fabulous freelance world of financial instability you are going to LOVE it!
When I got laid off from Majorcompany over 7 years ago it was like I could breathe again. Now, learning to change my spending and shopping habits took time, any and all savings and credit are long gone, being with the kids all day is not always fun but we are soooo much better off emotionally. Yay for you for walking away on your own!!
So happy for you guys! And a bit jealous :)
Congratulations! The scariest choice is usually the right choice!
Holy shit! Congratulations on pursuing something new! You will have to share the details with your readers. :)
yay you!! :)
OMG! Congrats! I am supremely jealous – and so happy for you!
Congratulations!!! So very happy for you… I hope all of your dreams come true :)
WOOOOO!
Congrats! I made the same jump 5 months ago and it’s the best decision I ever made. I’ve been following you since the Diaryland days, and you’re a fantastic writer–you can do it!
Yet again, you constantly push yourself in the direction you want to go – yey for you!!
Good for you Linda – way to make you and your sanity, family, and dreams a priority! Best of luck!!!
Had to share this … It reminded me of you not so much because you need to see it, but because you’ve tackled these questions on your own. Inspiring to see what happens when you do!
http://www.fivebigquestions.com/
Congratulations. That is such exciting news!

Congrats!!
Whee! So exciting! Congratulations.
I don’t care whether there are already 303 comments – I had to add my own — YAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAY!!!!!
You will not regret it! Times my get tough and you may get anxious, but you have taken this leap of faith because you have faith in yourself and JB and your beautiful sons that you will all stick together and work it out. Through good times and bad!
I’ve probably said this more than once here — I quit my fulltime job 11 years ago at the same time my husband, a carpenter, decided to go out on his own as a contractor. Yeah, it was scary, yeah we had some hairy moments but we had each other and where there’s a will there’s a way.
