JB’s main Father’s Day present was a new grill, something he’s been wanting for the past few summers. I couldn’t figure out a way to pick it up ahead of time and somehow keep it hidden around the house somewhere, so in lieu of trying to gift-wrap a Char-Broil I made him don a blindfold (hot!) for the trip to Home Depot will-call desk. It was really sort of ridiculously fun.

It was a perfect Dad-centric day, with lots of bike riding, BB gun shooting, and an epic pre-bedtime wrestlefest. God, those kids love their father. I feel like there’s something extra wonderful in this for me, in that my own dad was kind of not so great and now I get to experience what it’s supposed to be like. My boys are growing up with the knowledge that their father loves them more than anything, and will be always, always be there for them. I don’t need a holiday to be reminded how awesome that is, but it’s all I kept thinking about today. How lucky we are.

Did you and yours have a good Father’s Day? What did you do today?

We woke up late, ate biscuits and gravy (with elk sausage yummmm), then went for a hike and then 4-wheeling! It was a super day for us, too.

I was actually thinking earlier that these Parent (Mother’s/Father’s) Day holidays are silly and when I have kids, we’ll be skipping them, but…maybe you’ve changed my mind.

He looks so excited, and I love the way Riley is looking at him.

My husband also got a grill, but he wanted something that cost more than I wanted to spend. Instead, I found a fancy used one on Craigslist for 1/3 the price new, plus 2 tanks. Yeah! He’s happy. :)

I sent our kids, and my husband, to Kung Fu Panda 2. Win-win. Then we made BBQed ribs on said grill.

We were at my parents’ house so we all went out to dinner. It wasn’t much but it was really nice to all be together. I had the kids do hand/foot prints and threw together a little card for my husband though. He liked it. :)

My ex decided it was just a regular day and didn’t want the kids until the usual switch time at 5 pm. Apparently he didn’t think it might be a big day to his kids. So my girls and I spent the day at the pool!

I am RIGHT THERE with you. I barely know my dad, despite the fact that he lived in the same town I grew up in. Now my kids have a wonderful dad and it’s always kind of a bittersweet (but mostly sweet) thing to watch him in action. It’s like I didn’t even know what I was missing until I saw what a good dad actually looked like.

That said, we celebrated with a huge breakfast and a morning hike — then my daughter went and rammed her head into our patio table playing “mud monster” in the backyard. Four stitches right above her eye! So that’s one for the memory books.

I have that same grill. It’s awesome! I think JB will love it.

Ha! That smile on JB’s face is priceless!

On weekends I get up with our son on Saturday and hubby gets to sleep in, and then on Sunday I get to sleep in and hubby gets up with him(kiddo gets up by 6:30 most mornings). I asked if he wanted to switch days this weekend and he said no. So then on Saturday we spent about 2 1/2 hours at the pool. Both hubby and son napped on the car ride home, and on Sunday morning our son slept until 7:45! I rolled over and said “And that’s your gift. You’re welcome. Happy Fathers Day!”
Later we joined most of my immediate family for a lunch brunch at the Irish pub. A good time was had by all 4 generations.

We grilled at my parents’ house then met friends for an epic kickball tournament with about 40 people. It was a fun day.

I am reminded by your comment how fortunate I am to have such a wonderful, amazing father. I am so glad that you can experience this through your own husband, though.

We did lots of chores because we just moved but starting Friday night, and going through Sunday night, I cooked all my husband’s favorite meals. And the little ones doted on him so it was a good weekend!

How fun is that?? Riley looks so excited in that first picture.

My husband wanted a haircut (I cut his hair) and he WANTED to mow the lawn and clean the basement. UM, OKAY BUDDY. Happy to oblige! I made him a special breakfast and we had a couple of presents for him too.

Linda, I have written to you before that I have an old-lady crush on your husband and now you made it clear to me why. My father was an abusive psycho and my husband left me when my sons were two years old, so I never got to see any “fathering” in action. In addition, my 38 yr old sons (today) refuse to reproduce. So what’s an old lady to do but live vicariously through your beautiful boys and their wonderful dad. I must add that I think you are awesome too.

Sounds like you guys had a great time. Since our son is only 17 months, I took my husband to Six Flags over Georgia. We had a blast. He was just like a kid in a candy store!

sounds like you guys had an awesome fathers day. i am really close to my dad, so its so nice to hear that your guys have a great relationship with their dad!

as for what i did for father’s day? my dad and i spent the weekend in bethesda md at congressional country club watching rory mcilroy hit and chase a little white ball around in the grass. my dad and i definitely bond over golf, so getting to spend fathers day weekend with him at this major tournament was absolutely perfect. (and im lucky that my little sister could care less about golf and was more than happy to let me and my dad enjoy our weekend together!)

We totally relaxed and spent some time thinking about what it’ll be like next year when my husband’s a father of our by-then 6-month-old. Guess: not quite so relaxing!

We went to the horse races. This has become some sort of a tradition. This year though we didn’t get to stay for all 9 races a lot different with a 5 month old in tow. Not to mention my 15 year old fell asleep….late night with the xbox. All in all it was a good day!

I’m almost 7 months pregnant with our first baby right now. We decided to keep the parent holidays low key this year since we don’t REALLY feel like parents yet. I made giant meatball subs with homemade marinara and an awesome meatball recipe, and then we watched a movie he wanted to watch. I, too, had kind of a not so great experience with my own father, and I’m beyond excited to see my husband with our baby because I know how different he’s going to be. Glad you guys had a great day!

i got to meet up with my family in Boston (near neither of our homes) and spend the day with cousins, aunt & uncle, brothers & girlfriends, and parents at my aunt & uncle’s lake house. we made food together, munched on it, swam in the lake, basked in the sun, and played games. it was spectacular.

I love this post especially because I feel like I could have said the same thing about my husband. (my dad was not so great as well and my husband is just the opposite)

Our day involved water guns, baby pools and a slip n slide – it was a blast.

We’re on vaca at the beach so we did some beachy and pooly stuff. The gifts were shrimp dinner and the promise that I’d make him crepes for breakfast. :) And a video game, that my 6yo picked out for his dad. That was the best part. He picked it himself.

This was my husbands first Father’s Day without his Dad, who died suddenly this past September. It was a bittersweet day. My boys (approx the same ages as Riley & Dylan) showered him with gifts and were on their best behavior. We all spent the afternoon relaxing with my Dad on his boat. It was a way easier day than I expected. But I admit, I really miss my father in law. He was a fantastic grandpa to my boys and a great father to my husband.
