Riley’s August 31st birthday in 2006:

That extremely suspicious baby has grown into such a rambunctious, happy, funny, tender-hearted boy. God, it’s amazing to think eight years have gone by. It just gets better and better.

It does keep getting better and better. Eight is a great age!

It’s been wonderful watching that suspicious lil boy grow up! I will admit when my girl arrived almost 5 mos ago, I did have a few “What would Linda do?”-type moments, and reassured myself on far more than one occasion in the wee hours of the morning when my lil bean would only sleep in her bouncy seat (I think you had a similar experience with Dylan?). Anyway, these first 8 years have been a trip and I can’t wait for the rest!

  3. Penne on September 1st, 2013 7:21 pm

    And in 8 seconds, he’ll be 20.

  4. Jo on September 1st, 2013 7:28 pm

Happy Birthday Riley from New Zealand! The suspicious baby photo is just gorgeous, neat to see how he’s grown over the years. And, as a long-time reader of your blog, happy 8 years of parenthood to you and JB! :)

  5. Rhea on September 1st, 2013 7:37 pm

Happy Birthday! How do you keep looking year after year younger though?

  6. honeybecke on September 1st, 2013 8:01 pm

Nevermind the kid, he’s gonna be cute whatever. How the hell do you manage to get a pretty pic with him every year?

Happy birthday Riley!! My oldest just turned 12 – she’s had that suspicious look at times as well – each year does keep getting better!!

Happy birthday Riley! He gets older and you become even more of a babe every year, Linda.

Blink and they’re 18 going off to college. Your family is gorgeous and you’ve done a wonderful job as a mom. Congrats!!

  16. Carolyn J. on September 2nd, 2013 3:51 pm

Seriously, is there a portrait of you in your attic getting older?

In the second-to-last photo, the backdrop almost looks fake because it is impossibly beautiful. I can’t think of a better place to have a birthday.

  17. Kris on September 2nd, 2013 4:06 pm

    Happy Happy Birthday, Riley!!

You look 100% completely, honest to God happy in the photo of you & the boys this year. So, so much love.

  18. Kami on September 2nd, 2013 11:02 pm

Yep! One if the reasons I started reading you years ago! My baby just turned 8 in Aug. too! I agree I love this age! Happy birthday Riley! :)

  19. Ris on September 3rd, 2013 6:39 am

The amazing thing to me is that in 8 years, you don’t appear to have aged a day.

  20. Courtney on September 3rd, 2013 12:48 pm

    Happy birthday Riley!

  21. Jennifer on September 3rd, 2013 12:59 pm

Echo what Mis Ris said above – I see 8 years of Riley getting older but in those 8 years you’ve gotten younger!

It’s also so fun to see that Riley will forever have memories of his birthday celebrated in gorgeous weather with family on the banks of the Umpqua.

I’d love to see a pic of what cousin Brody looks like these days! A real big kid by now I bet.

  22. Nancy on September 3rd, 2013 6:42 pm

Happy birthday Riley!! (and Linda, your hair looks terrific!)

  23. nonsoccermom on September 3rd, 2013 9:57 pm

I think I marvel at this annually (possibly only to myself), but I started reading your blog when you were pregnant with Riley and wow. Hard to believe he’s 8 already. What a great kiddo.

  24. Mary Clare on September 4th, 2013 7:08 am

Happy birthday to Riley! Happy birth day to you and JB! Congrats on 8 years on this wild ride of parenthood.

  25. Lena on September 7th, 2013 8:56 am

I started reading your blog around the spider episode. Riley was just a baby. Happy birthday, little man!

  26. Karen on September 19th, 2013 9:04 am

    Happy Birthday Riley!

Now please may I come and spend MY birthday at the lovely picnic table by the water?

Reading this I realize I’ve been with you for these 8 years, I remember when you were writing for fans disappointed that you were going to become “another mommy blog”. I didn’t have a kid at the time, but she’s 5 now, and in all these years and all your stages, your voice has stayed steady. I appreciate that. You are talented and a damn good read. Happy belated birthday to Riley.
