April 26, 2007

I had a very pleasant morning with Riley today, up until the moment when we left the house and he saw JB’s truck and immediately began crying “DAA DA! DA DAAAAAAA!” over and over again, all the way to daycare. Next time JB leaves town, I’m going to make him park that goddamned truck out of view somewhere. Like maybe in the two car garage we had added to our house at great expense? Oh, excuse me, the shop. The shop that’s so full of equipment and gear the only car that could fit inside would have to be Matchbox-sized. Right.

Riley definitely misses his dad (he did a pathetic double take the other night when he heard something outside the front door, and plaintively said “Dada bye bye?”), but we’ve had a pretty good week. Other than the teething, I don’t know how in hell he could possibly have more teeth coming in because I swear he’s already got, I don’t know, NINE THOUSAND fucking teeth, but judging from all the drooling and snotting and the occasional WMD-grade tantrum, he’s working on something up in that gum line of his. Oh, and there was kind of a tragic diaper rash situation which involved the most awful post-poop torture-fests where I would wipe him and he would writhe and scream and I would have to wipe him some more and there would be more writhing and screaming, and of course when I mentioned the diaper rash to JB over IM he was all “That’s why I always use the powder” in what can only be described as a Smug Text-Based Tone. I’d like the record to show that when I was out of town and Riley got croup, I did not say to JB, “That’s why I always avoid the Laryngotracheobronchitis virus!”.

I’m glad that JB’s coming home tomorrow; although I’ve enjoyed having some solo time with Riley I’m looking forward to our little family unit being together again. Plus, I think Mr. I-Always-Use-the-Powder should have ample opportunity to do just that. As soon as he walks in the door? Diapering torch passed.

New comments section subject! Esteemed reader Shawna would like to get your input on a travel-related question: she has the opportunity to take a solo vacation (she’s got plenty of airline points and vacation time, and a husband who can’t leave his business right now but is willing to take care of their 15-month-old so Shawna can travel on her own), and would like some suggestions on where to go. She lives in Ottawa and has 3 to 5 days to invest in this vacation, and a flexible budget. I asked for more details on what she was interested in doing or places she’d like to see, and she said she’s basically open to whatever ideas people had.

So! Your mission is to tell Shawna where she should go on her vacation. I’m really interested in your responses because Seattle feels particularly dreary and non-springlike today and I could use a little mental vacation myself.

How weird with the travel request, since I was going to write to you about what to do in Seattle and Vancouver. We unexpectedly got front row seats to see the Police in Vancouver in late May, which is great, but we live in Virginia. We decided to make a vacation out of it. We fly into Seattle and are going to drive to Vancouver for the concert. Would like to see stuff in both places. Not sure how long to spend in both and what to do. You’re the only person I “know” in the Pacific Northwest. Hard to advise your reader from Ottawa, as I love Canada and also want to go there on my vacations. I guess I wouldn’t leave Ottawa?!?

    Hey folks,

Thanks for all the great suggestions! I want to stay in Canada or on the continental U.S., since that’s how far my airline points will get me, but that still leaves tons of places that y’all mentioned. I particularly love getting the lowdown on out-of-the-way spots.

Let’s throw something else into the mix: If anyone can think of a short (like 2 or 3) day tour, course or conference (BlogHer comes to mind but I”m sure there are lots of other things) that my husband would totally not feel left out of if I took it without him, that would be awesome too. It’s great to combine some relaxation with a chance to learn something new and it gives you something to talk about with strangers who are there too. I may have dreamed it, but I could have sworn that years ago I read about a spa in New Mexico that also ran a short wilderness survival course over the weekend…

    Two out-of-the-way suggestions:

If you have enough airline miles to get you to Florida from Canada:

Fly into St. Petersburg/Tampa airport and rent a car. Stop for a Cuban sandwich in Ybor City (Tampa’s old cigar district), then proceed directly to Pass-a-grille, FL, just south of St. Petersburg on the tip of St. Pete beach. On a two-block-wide island, gorgeous sunsets, blue blue water, historic district, totally untourist-ruined. Eat at the Seahorse, Sea Critters, the pizza joint. Stay at Island’s End (B&B) or at Sabal Palms Inn (budget, w/ kitchenette). Bring books to read. Ride the bikes if you stay at Sabal Palms. There’s a bird sanctuary and a cheap trip to Shell Island and a Salvador Dali museum all nearby, if you need to get out and see and do. Oh- and don’t tell anybody it’s there. PLEASE.

If you have enough miles to get you all the way to Key West, get there (or to Miami) and rent a car and drive the Highway 1. Snorkel at John Pennekamp state park; see Bahia Honda State Park; stay on Big Pine Key so you can see the endangered Key Deer wander through at breakfast and sunset. (Stay at Casa Grande- dirt cheap for the Keys, and beautifully secluded, and you can use kayaks and bikes). Drive into Key West, experience the roosters and sunset gathering and general party atmosphere, and then drive back to BPK for peace and quiet. One thing: it is unbelievably hot in the summer, and cheaper. The winter is much more pleasant, but more expensive and crowded.

Congrats, wherever you go! Wish I had the chance for a trip like that!!

I don’t genuinely care how or once i get the Letters in the Mail. Every time it arrives, it feels like a letter should be. It’s suddenly there in my mail box just one day. A nice, tangible surprise. I am for you doing whatever you want when you send it. Mix it up for the individuals who help get it sent out. Include crumbs from your lunch. Coffee stains. Whatever. Keep the tedious naturel of getting letters out to a minimum by doing whatever you feel like that day. The arrival with the letter and the words of the author inside are what matters. Personally, what I like best about The Rumpus is that I hardly ever understand what I’ll browse that day. Or if there isn’t one that day, maybe it’s because Stephen couldn’t discover anything to say or there was far too much planning on.

it isn’t magic. . Phentermine is used togther with diet, exercise and behavioral modification to treat obesity (excessively overweight) in people with risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or diabetes. . ask your family doctor but I doubt any ethical doctor will prescribe it. There are possible side effects & he will never see her if there are.

Well it is hard to determine. Blogger has the highest alexa ranking, but alexa ranking doesn’t pull that much power on the search engines alone.. . I think that if you go for the famous ones like blogger and wordpress, your blogs will get indexed very quickly. If you go for the newer ones, it will take a little longer than the famous ones to get indexed.
