Your Baby’s Development at Week 39 of Pregnancy: You may notice that your baby is not moving around very much — he or she is in cramped quarters at this point!

Well, part of that statement is a big old no-shitter, but apparently Smalltopus has not been doing his Required BabyCenter.com Reading, or maybe he’s gotten wind of this whole cutting-into-the-belly-with-sharp-objects business that’s supposed to happen tomorrow and he figures his best bet for a safe exit is to simply mosh-pit his way out of there. I have grave concerns about this child’s ability to sleep for more than a few minutes at a time, based solely on his fetal activity level, which I would describe as “excruciatingly energetic”.

I am having a very hard time wrapping my head around the fact that this baby is going to be on the outside of my body tomorrow. I mean, I am more than ready to make good on his eviction notice because DUDE, human beings just shouldn’t get this pregnant, we should eject the babies when they’re about the size of a grapefruit and then keep them in fur-lined pouches or some such thing, but I can hardly believe that I’m going to meet my youngest son in a matter of hours, and that he will have a tiny little face that I will be able to look at.

Will he look just like Riley did? Or completely different? What if he looks like Trogdor — coupla beefy arms, consummate Vs? What if the ultrasound tech got her anatomy screwed up and STP is actually a girl, which would be fine, except the whole coming-home outfit would be ALL WRONG.

I am awash in anticipation. Also: fear. Also: chocolate peanut butter ice cream.

We go to the hospital tomorrow at 6 AM, and I’ll need to spend a few hours on some medication (NOT magnesium, thank god) before going into surgery. My guess is that they will stash us in some room where JB and I will languish for the entire morning until someone remembers we exist and whisks me into the OR. During that time, I imagine I will be oscillating between a full-body freakout and mind-numbing boredom, so I’m hoping you might indulge me with some bloggy entertainment.

I know lots of you have already sent your good wishes and I sure appreciate that. Here’s what I’m thinking: if you’re up for it and you read this in time, will you hit the comments box sometime between now and Monday afternoon and tell me a little bit about yourself? I’ll be able to read your comments from my phone, and it seems like a fun, distracting thing to do while cooling my jets in a depressing hospital room.

I have a little questionnaire in mind:

1. Your name (you can stay anonymous if you like)
2. Your age (you can lie about this if you like)
3. Your life in a nutshell: who you live with, what you do for work (category includes raising children and going to school, obvs.)
4. How long have you been reading this blog, and what keeps you coming back?

Oh, I know, I know. That last question is so lame, sorry. What can I say, I’d love to know your answers.

At some point tomorrow I think one of us should be able to update this site with some baby stats, otherwise check in with my Flickr page. Will there be at least one crappy newborn photo taken with a cameraphone? You bet.

All right, friends. I’ll see you on the flip side.

4. I started reading your blog when you posted the pic of your husband’s bare butt on a camping trip (Hi JB!!!) and I’ve been coming back ever since because I love your writing style and your sense of humor.

3. I’m a working mother (nurse tech at a hospital) of two boys 11 and 8, married for 5 years (don’t do the math), and I’m a senior in nusing school- we just happen to be covering OBGYN which is so much more amusing with your comments taken into consideration.
4. I’ve been reading your blog for about 5 years I guess? Since you were on Diaryland. I read cause you’re funny, good at putting things in terms that I can identify with (which I’m sure makes you good at your day job too) and I love your photos.

And can I just say god-doggit 494 comments! WOW! I didn’t know so many people read!! I knew it was a lot but WOW.

Congrats on the new baby and can we PLEASE be told the name!!!?

I’m 58 (GAWD!!!)

I’m a legal secretary, married, have two grown children, 4 grandchildren. Live in the Midwest. Mostly boring life, work, eat, sleep, rinse, lather, repeat. I live vicariously through blogs that others write.

I love your writing style. Always interesting and funny. You have a wonderful turn-of-phrase. I snorted out loud at the “spray of terrified urine like a psychotic sheltie” (that may not be an exact quote, going from memory here) And I loved your Steve Irwin post and subsequent Halloween costume for Riley, who is, without doubt, the most adorable toddler around. I love the pictures of him!! All your pictures are really good. I love seeing your trip pictures as they are nothing like the scenery around here.

Keep up the good work. Good luck with No. 2.

3. Living in Portland, OR (I had to get the hell out of Seattle), married (Last night I accidentally said I’ve been “dating” my husband for 4 years.) We’ve no kids yet, but we’re veerrrry close to being ready. I work in energy efficiency consulting and I’m addicted to the Sunday NYT, crafting, and bike racing (cyclocross and road).

4. I think I found you originally through Not Martha – maybe 3 years ago? And I’ve been hooked ever since. You’re honest, unique, hilarious, gutsy, and a total breath of fresh air in a virtual world of stuffy posers (though? Parent Dish? Love you. Hate PD).

Can’t wait to meet STP!

3. I am a SAHM who does part-time grant administration while I figure out when I want to go back to work full time. Not any time soon. The little one, Claire is 8 1/2 months old and she keeps me busy enough. We have two cats (Yuki and Sydney aka the fuzzy little bastards.) Mostly I hang out with the playgroup, and make sure Claire isn’t trying to eat the cats.

4. I think I’ve been reading since about the KY in the bathroom incident. I know that’s the entry that continues to stand out in my mind. I keep coming back because you are funny, girl. If we lived near each other, I’d so want to be your friend.

1. Your name = Whitney (or whitneybee on flickr)

2. Your age = 32

3. Your life in a nutshell: who you live with, what you do for work.
I’m a native Californian (still living in the silicon valley) who would prefer to spend all day taking photos but I spend the week sitting in a cubicle doing graphic design (which I can’t really complain about all that much). I live with a shoe collection that threatens to take over my apartment and my boyfriend who is appalled by the amount of closet space required for shoes.

4. How long have you been reading this blog, and what keeps you coming back?
Oh my, probably for a couple of years. I think I originally found you via Not Martha, and I was hooked. It may have been some time around the cereal bowl debate. I keep coming back for the writing and the photos.

Hope everything goes well today!

1. Name: Caitlin
2. Age: just shy of 26
3. Your life in a nutshell: I live (in sin) with my boyfriend and our two cats. I’m a first-year teacher at a public school in New Orleans where I teach 8th grade English (this is as amazing and harrowing as it sounds!). I love reading, sometimes writing, doing stuff outdoors, and both making and viewing theatre. I also perform with a couple of burlesque troupes on the sly, under a fabulous false name and lots of identity concealing sparkles and wigs :)
4. I have been reading this blog since you were unemployed, so, early 2002? I keep returning to it because your writing is AMAZING–funny, poignant, and revealing–and because, in a Creepy Von Creeperton kind of way, I feel that I “know” you and your family after reading along with all the ups and downs of your life the past several years. Also, hearing about Riley’s shenanigans keeps the lid on my twitching ovaries (though the cute stories make me want to throw the Trojans in the garbage disposal). Thank you, as always, for sharing your fabulous self with us!

As of this morning — 502 comments???? Did you have ANY idea how many of us are waiting for that baby to be born??

We’ve “met” before but here are a few more details:

1. Donna from Edmonton, Alberta
59 years old — yes, another of the “oldies”
2. Married to ‘original’ husband for almost 32 years, no children
3. We were both fortunate to be able to take early retirement so we’ve spent the last few years doing whatever-the-heck we want. I read mysteries/suspense ALL THE TIME. Well, I clean the house once in a while :) but I do love being lazy! In previous lives, I was a teacher but mostly did secretarial work
4. I haven’t a clue how I found your blog but am grateful on an almost-daily basis that I did! Are you bored yet with me telling you how much I enjoy your writing and the cuteness that is Riley?
5. Oh man, it’s only 10 to 11 here in Edmonton, so not even 10 am in WA — sigh. . I suppose that baby isn’t here yet. . . .

3. Mom of 2 wonderful boys, the oldest will be 2 this Saturday and my youngest is 7 months. I love being a mom although on particularly rough days when the screaming has reached a fever pitch and when Dora and Diego are constatnly on the TV I envision myself as a world traveler without a care in the universe. I’m the AVP for Info Tech for my division in a big insurance company (booooooooorrrrrrrinnnnngggggg).
I am married to a wonderful man who is worth his weight in gold and diamonds and platinum. He changes diapers, does the dishes and helps out with every single aspect of parenting. Plus he’s ZEXY and a romantic.
4. I discovered your Purple Is a Fruit Blog about 1.5 years ago and became and instant addict. When you announced that you were leaving I went back and printed every single one of your entries. Stalkerish? Maybe….but my husband and I love your entries so much because YOU GET IT. That’s what keeps me coming back – even over at parent dish – where I refuse to read everyone else’s comments. Those. People. Are. INSANE.
I have since become an addict of this site too. I’m not crazy, really! I swear….

Linda, I am so excited for you and JB and Riley! I can’t wait to see STP!

I had a c-section with the girls — my own experience was awesome and I hope yours is even better and easier! Recover quickly and without that spinal headache. Best wishes to all 4 of you!!

3. I live in Louisville, Kentucky where I work for an organization that does land conservation. I moved back home, which was followed by my mom moving out. So, it’s just me and my dog. I’m trying to figure out what I would actually enjoy doing in life, but so far I have only been able to come up with answers like “Be Ira Glass, Be Sarah Vowell, Be a writer on The Office.”

4. I started reading this blog shortly after Riley was born. I have no idea how I came across it. I love cute kids and I love good, funny writing, so your blog works out really well for me.

Also, I’m the college friend that Sarah-near-Fenway-Park mentions. Our conversations would go something like this, “I hate this stupid class. I’m sick of studying. Maybe I need some nachos.”
“YOU SHOULD COME LOOK AT THIS BABY. OH MY GOD. I NEED ONE.”

I know this is probably a bit late (there is a massive time difference) but here I am,

Name: Rakel

Age: 32

I live in Iceland with hubby, our almost one year old son and two crazy cats. for the last year or so I’ve been changing diapers for a living. Ah, the sweet life of crotch cleaning!

I’ve been reading your blog for at least three years but that’s as far as I’ll go, I always get very confused when I have to pinpoint stuff in the past.

I mostly read sundry with my precious morning coffee and your writing has added a great deal to my life. We seem to have lots in common, and I really enjoy the way you express your thoughts and opinions.

Hubby and I send our best wishes for easy diaper changes and peaceful nights!

My name is Sarah, and I’m 29 years old. I live in San Bernardino, CA. I am the Test Officer at a local university. Basically, I administer standardized testing for the campus and surrounding communities. You may be surprised but it is not a boring job. The only drawback is that most people don’t like me, who wants to come and sit for a test? But I’m usually really nice, I promise! Unless you cheat… or don’t understand how to listen… or are disrespectful… or just plain lacking any common sense… then watch out! But really, I am nice. Heh.

Anyway, I’ve been reading this blog since you were living in the apartment. From the moment I landed on your page I was hooked. You are funny and smart and unique. I’ve never read any other blog that reasonated with me as your does.

Best wishes to you and your family!!!

3. My husband Brad and I have two boys, six and eight. We live in Rancho Santa Margarita, CA, the most Christian Republican county in California, which is quite an experience for a bleeding heart liberal from the San Francisco area. I work part-time from home in high tech PR.
4. I’ve been reading this blog since very shortly after you removed some posts out of respect for JB. I heard about you via Gentry de Paris’ blog–you sent her a homemade Christmas card that she mentioned in her blog. I keep coming back because you’re an excellent writter, and describe married life and motherhood in such a relatable way. I have to tell you JB is really the star of your blog–“Jesus fuck the cat is sucking my breath” is about the funniest statement ever uttered. The song sung to Ashley from the shower rates a close second. I count on you for a good laugh when I really need it.

And you must be having the baby RIGHT NOW.

I used to use my title but ever since I got tangled up with some unsavory google-obsessive characters I have been more circumspect, so I will just say I am a health science person looking for a job post post-doc. Married childless Seattle yuppie.
I have been reading you since sometime after I met Chiara online, which was at least 4 years ago. I keep coming back because I like your mix of Serious Stuff and I Gotcher Sausage Right HERE Darlin’ stories.

By now, you are probably done being surgically violated. I hope you are doing okay and that Smalltopus is all your heart desired and then some. (I mean in terms of pleasure, not limbs or body mass or anything like that.)

3. I live on the Big Island of Hawaii with my husband Dave and our five children- 8 yr old girl, 7 yr old boy, 5 yr old girl, 3 yr old girl, and 19 month old girl. We have a coffee/macadamia nut farm, but that’s because we like living here, not because it makes us much money. My husband runs his own business. I used to be a public school elementary teacher/reading specialist but now I am home with my kids and homeschool, which is some of the most fun I’ve ever had, as crazy as it is.
4. I’ve been reading your blog for a long time, probably since soon after Riley was born though I don’t really remember. I came here as a link from another blog though I don’t remember which one. I thought you were funny and honest, and then once in awhile you’d throw in something so poignant and emotional about what it means to be a mom, a wife. I seem to read blogs from people who are close in age to me but have very different lives because it’s interesting to understand other people’s perspectives and choices and to learn from their different experiences.

Looking forward to seeing baby pictures!

Yours may be the blog that I have read continuously for the longest period of time. Your posts are funny, open, and honest. Tricia

Your name: Tricia (pronounced TRISH-A. not TRICK-A, who’s names a person tricka?!)

Your age: 30

Your life in a nutshell: Hate when I get called “Tricka,” obviously. Living in Charlotte(ish), NC (just south of the big city, it counts though) with my boyfriend. I work for a place in VA that I’ve worked for since I was 19 (I know, time to move the f on Trish, geez), am a Web Designer and I work from home 3 weeks out of the month. I drive up to VA once a month for a week and stay with my parents. Good thing I get along with my parents is all I have to say. Not married, though we’ve been dating long enough to be (TICK TOCK DUDE, TICK TOCK)and we have three cats. I blog, on occasion. but my life isnt really that interesting to warrant a daily post. Or im just not that creative. One of the two.

How long have you been reading this blog, and what keeps you coming back? UHHHHHHHHHH… I dunno… like a year and a half? a year? something close to that. I keep coming back because .. man you just write so brilliantly and so full of wit and I WANNA BE LIKE YOU WHEN I GROW UP… in a uhh. not creepy kinda way. I emailed you once about how you should totally write that book. I still mean it. I’d buy it for sure. I have never met you, obviously, but I’ve got this weird like butterfly-nervous belly thing going on for you today.

Yeah thats not creepy either. OK! so um! Anyway. Good luck today! Break a leg! Whatever you should say here! Best to you and your family!

Hi Linda – My name is Janet and I’m 47 years old. I’m glad to see that there are a few others in my age group that read your blog. I was worried that I might be the only one over 35.

My husband and I just celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary last June and we have two lovely teenage daughters (Misty, 13 and Amanda, 18). We’re native Californians but recently we’ve contemplated moving due to the high cost of living here (Silicon Valley). I’m currently unemployed but when I am working I’m an Executive Administrative Assistant. I’m actually a Cosmetologist by trade but found that the money was better (more consistant) in office work (ugh, big mistake). The thing that I miss most about being in the beauty industry is the creative outlet and instant gradification that it offered. Believe me,
there is nothing creative or gradifying about being and Executive Admin. :/

What keeps me coming back to to read your blog is the fact that even though my children are much older than yours I can still relate because I’ve been through the same things not so long ago, and that you’re so open and honest in your writing. I don’t know how to explain it but it’s almost like when you read a really good book and you feel like you know the characters…

I’m so excited for you right now. I have tears in my eyes just writing this. Can’t wait for the new baby to get here. How wonderful that today is the day that you will be adding another member to your lovely family.

Hi Linda! I seriously have been thinking about you all morning and wishing you the best best best delivery possible.

My name: Bianca (you might know my last name from my emails to you about ZOMBIES)

My age: 28 (I’ll be 29 on March 7)

Life in a nutshell: Single and living in San Francisco (the greatest city in the world). I’ve lived here for the last 5 years but it’s been my dream to live here since I was about 9. I work at a children’s museum here in the city with a bunch of hipsters and artists and techies. I have a lynx-point siamese cat named Emaline (after a Ben Folds song because I LOVE him) and a freckle-faced dim-witted but incredibly lovable roommate.

I’ve been reading you since we were in 12% beer together. Back then, I was Anniewaits. I stopped writing a while ago but I’ve read you ever since. I guess that would mean I’ve been reading you for about 6 years now? Yeah, long time…

I live in Spring Hill, FL which is about 45 minutes north of Tampa. It’s ok. I’m embarking on a slow crawl back home to New Jersey. It’s a long story. Feel free to browse my blog if you would like to know just how the heck I wound up here and why it’s my life’s mission to get back home.

I have been reading your blog for over a year now. My friend Jean recommended it to me. She was correct-you are awesomely funny and a great writer.

GO STP!

3. I live in Atlanta with my husband, some fish, and a cat. I’m a network engineer who works at a big warehouse full of servers and whatnot, but this time last year I was a marine biologist (long story there). I am currently on a quest to become a beekeeper.
4. I’ve been reading for a little over a year now for the simple reason that your blog makes me smile. And who doesn’t like smiling?

My friend’s wife is also having her baby boy today. So I’ll be sending out twice the good luck brainwaves today. Congrats!

3. I live with my husband Rogene and two daughters… Tessa 5 and Emma 2.
4. I started reading your blog shortly after Riley was born. I can’t remember how I found it… I’m sure it a link from another blog, but I can’t remember which one.

I keep coming back because you are honest about motherhood… you don’t sugarcoat it, which is such a relief. I’ve enjoyed watching/reading about the remodels and your dieting and exercising. I’m going through a lot of the same things as you since I have a kid about the same age as Riley. I live in the Pacific Northwest too, so I can relate when you talk storms or the weather or travelling in Oregon, Washington and BC.

Most of all you are an amazing writer. I wish you would write a book. I’d buy it.

2. My Age: 35

3. Nutshell: Living as an independent IT consultant in San Diego, CA. Just re-enrolled in school after dropping out back in 1996.

4. How long: I’ve been reading your blog since 2003 or so. I remember when you won a gmail invite with your sweet rap lyrics. I remember when you still drank alcohol. I remember when your blog was not just about being a mother.

Hope all is well with you today!

Victoria, 42, lawyer, married, no kids, reader since 2002. What keeps me coming back is your wit, honesty, and your way with words, e.g., “we should eject the babies when they’e about the size of a grapefruit and then keep them in fur-lined pouches or some such thing.”

I’m probably a little late answering this, but I’ll do it anyways.

3. I live by myself with three cats, Sophie, Minerva, and Saito in freezing cold Michigan. I am currently going through a divorce. I’m a sales associate at a computer store, where I’ve worked for years.
4. Found you on diaryland.com in Aug. of 05. I had just found out I was pregnant at the time, and you were about to have Riley. I keep coming back because I some how became emotionally attached to your story, to your writing while I was going through such an emotional time myself.

4. How long have you been reading this blog, and what keeps you coming back? I’ve been reading since you started at dland. I can’t even remember how I found you. I stay because you are real and honest. Thanks for sharing all of this with all of us.

Holy Hell, Sundry–that there is a lot of comments!

Name: Alex
Age: 33
Life in nutshell: I currently live in Santa Barbara, CA as a live-in nanny. Since I’ve been reading your blog (’03 or ’04) I have lived in Boulder, CO, (preschool teacher) Denver, CO, (first grade teacher) Kailua-Kona, HI (resort nanny) and now here. I’ve fallen in love since moving here, so I think I’ll be sticking around a while, but its time to venture out on a different career path. Just not sure what yet. Yoga teacher/writer would be my druthers, so we’ll see how much confidence I can muster up in those directions.

Why do I keep coming back? Dude, have you READ you? Your awesome.

Sending you tons of long distance love/hugs/support/blah blah. You’ll shine!

2. 31 though closely approaching 32
3. I live with my boyfriend of 5 years, Kev, for 4 years in our ramshackle 3 bedroom terraced house in Liverpool, Uk.
No kids yet – though I’m still trying to persuade Kev! We do have two pet hamsters – named Precious and Clarice (Silence of the Lambs theme to all our hamsters past and present.)
4. I’ve been reading your blog since you were about a month pregnant with Riley – I found you while looking for links on Habitrail hamster cages (you spoke of them regarding a building in Japan!)
I, as every other bugger above has said, love your writing style and your humour. Riley is such a beautiful child (OK – you see him 24/7!) and I love reading about your trials and tribulations since he arrived with you.
Here’s hoping STP is as entertaining as Riley is – we wanna see double-frownage ASAP!
Hope you have a wonderful Birthday STP

It’s already mid-afternoon (I have had to WORK, how annoying is that!) so you might already have had the little one. I hope so. Anyway, here ya go.
1. Your name: Mrs. Who
2. Your age: 55
3. Your life in a nutshell: I’m a Library Media Specialist (retiring after 20 next year), married with two grown children and a darling two-year old grandson.
4. How long have you been reading this blog, and what keeps you coming back? Uh – I guess about two years – my daughter introduced me to your blog when she was pregnant. So, actually a little more than two!

OK, I think I am going to be #535 to leave a comment, so hopefully you see this before the big event. I had a scheduled C with my second and I totally remember, not fondly, the waiting, waiting, oh and the more waiting when my surgery was bumped back two hours!!!! My husband may have threatened to leave me on more than one occasion during those terrible five hours! :)

Ok, here goes on the questions:
1. My name is Ann, or Annie depending on how long you have known me for.
2. I am 32, and not proud of it, but felt it best not to lie to the internet
3. I live in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, with my aforementioned husband, son Aidan who is five, and daughter Ella who is 2 1/2. My husband is a member of the Canadian Military, so we have lived in a few different places, including Victoria, so I used to be closer to where you are. I am a mostly SAHMomma, but I do work very part-time at the Gap.
4. I have been reading you for about two years, I think. I found you when Kirsten linked to you off D & D and was instantly smitten. Your writing and honesty is very funny and I appreciate that you don’t sugarcoat your parenting journey. I also really like your decorating style. My next house, we move in July to Ottawa, is totally going to have an on the wall pasted thing, like you tree branch. It totally rocks!

I never posted a comment before, not sure why, but I do think you are great, in a non-stalker, blog reader way. Best of luck today and for the next few weeks. Life with two can be crazy, but great as well. Take care, Ann

Are we allowed to curse on your phone in the hospital? Because holy f*ck that is a lot of comments.
1. Alyce (pronounced Elise not Alice)
2. 34 (I had to do the math — my age has never really been much of an identifying characteristic; I suppose in many ways I feel like I’ve been in my 30s since I was 15)
3. I live in Santa Fe, NM, with my husband who is also a JB. No one calls him JB except me when referring to him on this here computer, but it’s truthful without being too revealing. We both work for a small IT consulting firm. It is dull, dull work, but it pays the bills. I grew up in the 70s with hippie dippy parents who told me I could be anything I want to be. So I am finally thinking about what that might be… In pursuit of my ultimate goal (not-to-be-disclosed here) I am applying to MBA programs for the fall. Please keep your fingers crossed that I don’t bomb the GMAT.
4. I’m not sure how long I’ve been reading. Off and on for probably 3.5 years, regularly for 2. You’re incredibly talented and hawt and stuff, so I’ll keep coming back.
