One of our very favorite places to go is the Rogue River in southwestern Oregon. It was in 2010 that JB and I were on the river trail and said, this is it. We have to move. We have to get closer to all this. We camped there last summer, and it felt a million miles from Seattle. In a good way while we were there, of course, and in a sad, frustrating way once we were home.

It used to take us about nine hours to get to Galice, where the wild section of the Rogue starts. Now it takes 2.5.

We drove there last weekend, camped for two nights, and came home on Sunday. Easy-peasy. We can do this any time.

yay! My husband and I met while working at Galice. Love that you enjoy this area as much as we do. Kinda nerdy. but I have to tell you I’ve been reading since Riley was born (same age as my son) and have you to thank for my crossfit addiction. Hope you got some Dutch Love while you were here.

I don’t know you, but your happiness is palpable. Really glad you are where you want to be. I’m about to move into a house with a yard (vs our current too small super urban townhome with 2 bedrooms and two children who do not share a room well OMFG) and I can’t wait to feel what you’ve been feeling. Your excitement just feeds my excitement.

You guys look like you’ve gotten younger! Or maybe it’s just massive amounts of stress being shed. Either way, you look great.

Awesome!! So happy you all found your happiness.

  12. Life of a Doctor's Wife on July 3rd, 2012 5:43 am

I’m not one to really be jealous of other peoples’ lives, but of yours, I certainly am! It is beautiful there.

  16. Mare on July 3rd, 2012 6:31 am

I’ve been reading you since that night we hung out at Austin JournalCon. To see where you are now is nothing but inspiration for me. Congratulations, and may the happiness you share with your family only continue to grow through days of great health, happiness and prosperity.

I thought that what was wrong with me is that I am getting divorced, and feel like everything is off. After looking at these pictures, I know that it’s not that, it’s that I need to get out in the woods. Duh.
It is gorgeous there and I am oh so jealous of the view!!!!

  19. lisa on July 3rd, 2012 8:17 am

Isn’t it a great feeling when you see your kids growing up with the lifestyle you dreamed they would have? I felt that way the moment my two year old jumped out of the car at her first camping trip and just started rolling around in the dirt. I knew we were “home”, lol. I grew up in the sf bay area, but spent every summer up in the Sierras, and that is where I feel I am from.

  20. Halyn on July 3rd, 2012 8:43 am

Oh, so happy for you guys! I have to admit, I was a little sad when you first moved, knowing that I was going to have to give up my fantasy of running into you at Alki someday. Seeing how much you love your life in Oregon, makes the loss of that fantasy completely worthwhile! You guys look fantastic, and your posts and tweets just seem…lighter, I guess, less worried, less burdened. You are such a poster girl for following your dreams–congratulations on making your life the life you want.

  21. Lola on July 3rd, 2012 12:08 pm

I have been reading you forever it seems and I’m so, so, sooooo incredibly happy that you are all moved, less stressed and so happy.

  22. Marolyn on July 3rd, 2012 12:26 pm

See that green right over there>>> that’s me. being jealous. However, I am also truly happy that you guys are living your dream. Yay for shorter trips to paradise!

  23. laziza on July 3rd, 2012 2:25 pm

Aw, look how chill you both look in that last photo. This is great. Congrats again.

  24. June on July 3rd, 2012 2:33 pm

My heart just sings for you! I am loving watching your new life unfold.

  25. sooboo on July 3rd, 2012 5:43 pm

    Amazing!!

  26. Elaine on July 3rd, 2012 8:42 pm

My parents lived in Gold Beach (at the mouth of the Rogue) and we used to make the drive from Seattle two or three times a year until my dad passed away and my mom moved up here. I love that area of the world, and I am so happy seeing you happy there. You guys worked so hard to make this dream come true, and you deserve all you’ve received!

  27. kalisa on July 4th, 2012 2:22 pm

    I LOVE the fishing pictures!!

  28. alyson on July 5th, 2012 4:03 pm

I am more of a lurker than a commenter, but I want to say that I am so very happy for you. It is great to read about how well your family is doing, and I hope you thrive in your new home!

  30. Erin@MommyontheSpot on July 11th, 2012 7:02 pm

Living your dream is an inspiration to me. Thank you for sharing this.

  31. OR Suz on September 9th, 2012 11:27 pm

After 12 years experiencing the same let down of returning home to Seattle after our glorious OR Coast trip, we decided to do something about it.
Though it’s not been a perfect move, it sure beats the alternative.
And I’m glad as hell we did it.
    Now >1hr. from Florence.
    Whenever we feel like it.

space Scowler Scowler, by Daniel Kraus If you like horror books, definitely check this out. Scowler is ostensibly YA, but I can't even imagine Stephen-King-loving preteen me reading it -- it's scary, bleak, and grueling as hell. But also wonderfully written and completely unique. space rosieproject The Rosie Project, by Graeme Simsion Funny and quirky and endearing and best of all, it's the sort of book you just can't put down. space marylou Mary-lou Manizer Highlight/Shimmer Powder This is basically a shimmery (not glittery!) powder that adds a really nice luminescent highlighting glow. I sweep it on the top of my cheekbones, on top of blush, and blend. space cosmeticsbox Wood Cosmetic Box by Lori Greiner I just got this makeup container and it's pretty fabulous. (Thanks, Shark Tank Lori!) It closes up into a nice attractive box, and opens with all sorts of clever drawers. Note that 1) it's TALL, so check measurements, and 2) you'll probably still need one separate thing to hold tall brushes. space goldfinch The Goldfinch Everyone seems to be talking about this book lately, and with good reason. I read it for what felt like weeks on end (it's LONG) and every night I had weird half-dreams about the stories that had unfolded. It's emotionally exhausting, but so beautifully written. space egyptian Egyptian Magic All Purpose Skin Cream This is a heavy-duty moisturizer made of olive oil and bee goo and it's perfect for icky winter dry skin. space pb2 PB2 Powdered Peanut Butter MIRACLE FOOD. It's powdered peanut butter you mix with water (or add to a smoothie, or...) and it has a fraction of the fat and calories of regular peanut butter. Plus: delicious. space timebalm The Balm Timebalm Anti-Wrinkle Concealer I'm always on the lookout for awesome concealers (my eye circles, let me terrify you with them), and this one is my current favorite. space brushes Real Techniques Starter Set I wouldn't have thought a different brush could make any sort of noticeable improvement in my makeup technique. I was so, so, SO wrong. If you like makeup, you need these brushes immediately. space Stainiac Stainiac Lip Stain Great lip stain that gives a natural rosy flush and lasts a really long time. space [More things I like...]
