Thanks to the snow finally retreating into some filthy piles of slush and melt-puddles JB insists on tracking all over the house, while barking, “What? I DID wipe my boots!” whenever I point accusingly at the prints (the man would claim to have wiped his boots even if there was a half-crushed, still-living Gila monster on the bottom of his tread, angrily waving its — I don’t know, tentacles or antennae or whatever the shit Gila monsters have — clearly proving he’d skipped the vital Scrape All Dirt, Mud, and Venomous Creatures from Thy Boots Before Entering the House rule), my mom and aunt were able to come over today for Christmas Part II, and here’s the thing, I love my family very very much, but can anyone explain . . . well, THIS?

I can’t say for certain that I’m being punished for the many years of obnoxious behavior, Manic Panic hair dye, and tongue piercings, but WITNESS THE EVIDENCE. Come on!

Well, Riley is of course in love with his new keyboard, and when he’s not banging on the keys he’s oddly mesmerized by it. Turn on the auto-music function and he just kind of trances out, so perhaps this will turn out to be the very best holiday gift of all. Child getting underfoot, demanding to know why the lights are on or NOT on, requesting a pen for nefarious purposes, or doing the annoying new thing where he calls me not Mommy but MOMMM in a teenagery tone of voice? I’ll just whip out the Sedative-Synth and set it to “STFU FOR 5 MINUTES FOR THE LOVE OF GOD”.

Naturally, Dylan is a fan of the intriguing toy, too.
3146733962_3e663ebc79.jpg

Although, the box it came in is nearly as much fun.

In other news, it’s That Time Again, where I trot out the same old end-of-year questionnaire. I believe I originally copied it from Gwen’s website in 2004, and I’ve been answering it ever since. Some of the questions are a bit silly, but it’s still kind of an interesting way to recap your year and compare to years past.

So you should embrace this thrilling ritual, because in the wake of the holidays I’m sure you have nothing better to do than answer some long-winded quiz, right? Here are the questions:

1. What did you do in 2008 that you’d never done before?

2. Did you keep your new year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?

4. Did anyone close to you die?

5. What countries did you visit?

6. What would you like to have in 2009 that you lacked in 2008?

7. What dates from 2008 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

9. What was your biggest failure?

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?

11. What was the best thing you bought?

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?

14. Where did most of your money go?

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?

16. What song will always remind you of 2008?

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
a) happier or sadder?
b) thinner or fatter?
c) richer or poorer?

18. What do you wish you’d done more of?

19. What do you wish you’d done less of?

20. How did you spend Christmas?

21. Did you fall in love in 2008?

22. What was your favorite TV program?

23. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?

24. What was the best book you read?

25. What was your greatest musical discovery?

26. What did you want and get?

27. What did you want and not get?

28. What was your favorite film of this year?

29. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?

30. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?

31. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2008?

32. What kept you sane?

33. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?

34. What political issue stirred you the most?

35. Who did you miss?

36. Who was the best new person you met?

37. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2008.

38. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.

I’ll post my own answers in the next few days, and if you’d like to participate on your own blog, I’ll link back to you. Once you’ve posted your entry, send me an email (sundry@gmail.com) with a subject line like “New Year’s Quiz”. Include your info, laid out like this:

Linda at All & Sundry

So I’ll need your name, the specific url to the entry where your answers are, and your blog’s name. Catfish? If you could HTML-ize it that would rule extra hard, but it’s okay if not.

[Update: I’ve linked your entries here, and I love you guys but I won’t be adding any more because I need to eat food and use the bathroom and pay attention to my children again and stuff. Go check them out!]

If you don’t have a blog, you’re welcome to post your answers in the comments here — I’d love to see as many of your answers as I can, because I’m . . . well, nosy as shit. But in a caring kind of way.

My son’s great aunt sent him battery-operated drumsticks from Restoration Hardware. They make the most annoying noises I have ever heard in my life, and all my friends in college were musicians, so that’s saying a lot. Jesus, I think she hates me. Here’s hoping that Riley will turn out to be a musical prodigy and thus you will not be tortured by the crazy synthesizer. However, for a 3 year old, that must be about the most awesome present ever. Good luck!

I just tried to log onto my website for the first time in…a while, and it doesn’t appear to be letting me. So um.

1. What did you do in 2008 that you’d never done before?
I joined swap-bot.com …it’s been a lot of fun!

2. Did you keep your new year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I never make new years resolutions…I kinda feel like if I’m not ready to give up something, right there and right then, no matter what day, I probably won’t just because it’s a new year. It’s funny I jumped straight to “give up something”…that give up something would be sugar.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
No, but my boyfriend’s sister is pregnant for the first time and due next month :)

4. Did anyone close to you die?
My Nan died a couple of months ago. Also one of my boyfriend’s ex-flatmates committed suicide earlier in the year.

5. What countries did you visit?
Um. New Zealand and Australia. Technically I didn’t “visit” New Zealand, but as it is foreign to most people here, I sound more cultured if I mention it.

A waistline?

7. What dates from 2008 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
I’m not sure that any will, really? Just the usual, birthdays, New Year, Christmas…

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
Um, my cats? I don’t know…

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
My boyfriend’s cousin’s husband. Get this – at my boyfriend’s sister’s wedding – he got drunk and poured hot wax over my boyfriend’s head. Which meant that I had to hit someone at a wedding. (although the groom watched the whole thing and cheered me)

14. Where did most of your money go?

Just now, and last night…pizza! I keep calling just after it closes. waa

Otherwise…my birthday was on a Friday night this year. Then my boyfriend’s sister’s wedding was the day after…so I ended up in smalltown NZ for my Friday night birthday :( It was still fun though – drove to Queenstown and had a party after. But we also missed out on a huge rock concert the night of the wedding – Kiss and Alice Cooper. My boyfriend’s sister really wanted to go too, but arranged the wedding before she knew about the concert. The wedding was great though!

HUGE noisey toy trick!!! Put scotch tape over the speaker!! The more layers of tape the quieter the toy gets!!! I have done this with everything from my daughters keyboard (from a Grandmother too) to the little wierd speakers on some freaky noise making Barbies.

She’s none the wiser because she can still hear it but my eardrumbs don’t shatter when plays with the same toy over and over again while sitting on the floor in front of me!

1) What did I do that I’ve never done before? Some yoga postures where I have my hands on the ground but my feet in the air.

2) New Year’s Resolutions – I guess I did. They were kind of vague: be more myself, be kinder, live in abundance. Yeah, I think I’ve done those.

3) Two of my dearest friends gave birth this year. In a way it’s like I’ve lost two of my best friends, but I’m very happy for them. And they’ll make wonderful people for this world of ours.

4) No one close to me died.

5) I visited England, Italy and Austria this year. Woo ha!

6) In 2009 I would like to have more family time, and more sex. Lots more. GOOD sex.

7) Etched on my mind memories: moving into my new place, going over the line with a friend (in a good way), getting my ass handed to me in a sparring match, two amazing yoga immersions

8) Biggest acheivement – PAYING OFF MY STUDENT LOAN!!!!! And forming a good friendship with an ex.

19) Wish I’d done less worrying

20) Spent Christmas with my mom in Tucson; she came to visit. It was… so awesome. So very very awesome.

no, no, exist no longer;
with you I shall experience them.

My mom bought a keyboard a few years back. Ours has a volume control, so it isn’t too bad. The kids love it, and my son calling it the “panyo” was pretty cute. I will have to think about my answers to the quiz.

1. What did you do in 2008 that you’d never done before?
Took a riverboat cruise. Climbed Huashan. Had stock options that were worth more (!!!) than the paper they were printed on.

2. Did you keep your new year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I’m not into new year’s resolutions.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Nope.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
Yes, my mother-in-law at just short of 93.

5. What countries did you visit?
Germany, France, China, Barbados. The last was work, not play.

6. What would you like to have in 2009 that you lacked in 2008?
Gee, nothing obvious occurs to me.

7. What dates from 2008 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
Probably December 24th, when we had all 4 kids at dinner together for the first time in 10 years. I don’t care to get into specifics here, but at one point it seemed unlikely that it would ever happen. Also May 17th, landing in China.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Getting invited to lecture in China.

9. What was your biggest failure?
Didn’t have any major ones this year.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Arrgh, hyper-extension on the left knee in February that is STILL not 100% healed.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
A Nikon D-40.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
#2 child’s, see question #7.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
Nobody, thankfully.

14. Where did most of your money go?

a) happier or sadder?
b) thinner or fatter?
c) richer or poorer?
happier (slightly), the same, and richer.

18. What do you wish you’d done more of?

At home, with ALL (!!) of the family.

21. Did you fall in love in 2008?

23. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?
Nope.

24. What was the best book you read?

Oh, I love it when you do this questionnaire! This year I actually get to respond on my own blog!

That keyboard looks WAY obnoxious – leave it to the relatives! My mom bought my kids identical keyboards that look remarkably similar to yours. Just think, jazzy Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star in stereo!!! Time to turn on the iPod!
