We had kind of an exciting morning around these parts:
By 12 PM, the school had already called me twice—once to tell me they didn’t have the right paperwork for Riley’s full day kindergarten registration and as a result I needed to come get him (I managed to convince the office manager to let him stay in his class, for the LOVE, while I rushed over to sign the paper in question), and once to tell me that Riley had bumped his head at recess. Our first school year: OFFICIALLY UNDERWAY.
Good for you Linda. My oldest (who is 37 now with children of her own) wouldn’t even let me take her on her first day. She insisted on riding the bus with her older friend who was in 3rd grade. It broke my heart. You bet I told her about it when her 2 started kindergarten!
I’m not a crier at all. But the first day of school? Gets me every time. Today was the first day of high school for my girl, and I was a weepy mess when I went to bed, this morning, in the shower, and immediately after I dropped her off. Oh, and at work with my office door closed. I’ll be okay tomorrow and that will last until the first day of her sophomore year.
Awwww…look at big boy Riley in Kindergarten! Dylan looks so chilled out in that top picture. Is his hand in his pocket? I can totally see him strolling in to K with shades on when it’s his turn – no big deal. How exciting!
Gorgeous pics! Well done Riley, well done you!
Awwwww. . . . I can’t believe I’ve been ‘reading you’ since before there even WAS a Riley. That most adorable baby boy has turned into an adorable kindergartener. Go ahead and shed a few tears, Mom!
Congrats! I am going to bawl like a baby when it’s Jacob’s turn. I hope Riley loves it!
I love that he’s not too big to hold daddy’s hand. Awwwwwwwww
Dylan looks big enough to go, too!
Dude. KINDERGARTEN. How did we get here? Hope Riley had a great day.
My first started Kindergarten today too.
Nolita said just what I was thinking re Dylan’s picture. Glad you got through it!
Cameron started today, too. I cried. And cried. Aaand cried.
Linda, I have been reading you forever, since Riley ws born and I loved this post. My son is starting Kinder too. I teach in his school and am wondering how I will survive his first day….will I blubber all day in front of EVERYONE?!
P.S. I see Kelso (the choices frog) onthe wall….good stuff
I don’t know if I should cry or congratulate you or hug you or what!
I teared up looking at those pictures! Very sweet.
AWESOME JOB MAMA!!! AND RILEY!!! congrats, wow seems impossible though, I can remember when he was itty bitty and you were sticking things up his rear to make him poop. Yeah good days.
I want to know, how did DYLAN take his bubby being gone all day?
Sara: you know, he was totally good. He plays really well on his own these days, so he just kind of goofed around by himself a lot. He was really excited to go pick Riley up, though.
You’re killing me Smalls.
He is so precious, and JD gets mad props for going too, most dads don’t. Dylan looks very interested, but Riley? When did this whole growing up thing happen?
My oldest grandkid went to homecoming on Sat., the second started high school this year, those are her two oldest, (my daughter’s kids) and she still has the two girls, third grade, and 4 years old…..AND she’s due again in Feb. Just when I thought the days of new babies were over….lol.
All four of them took the most adorable first day of school photos, and yeah, I cried. (She also got me with the homecoming pictures.)
Go Riley!! I’m sure he’ll do great. And don’t worry, my daughter got clocked in the eye by another kid within in the first week (it was a total accident).
I can’t believe he’s in kindergarten already! My son just started pre-K and on his second day, they called to tell me he needed stitches! he busted his lip on the playground. Sigh. Just a boy thing, I guess.
You all did great!
Today is my son’s 2nd day in kindergarten. He was fine yesterday when I dropped him off (we live too close to validate $350 a year for the bus), but today he became the “but I want to stay with you, mamma!” kid. I had him bussed to preschool for the two years he went because I was afraid he would pull that. I was hoping he was over it. :-( It was all I could do to keep it together!
Love it! I teach in an elementary school and he looks like he is doing GREAT. Hang in there, I was a nervous wreck sending my oldest to middle school this year :)
Wow…been reading since before Riley was born. Can’t believe he’s a full-on kid now!
My youngest started middle school today, cool as a cucumber. “Bye Mom!” she said, jauntily as she hopped out of the truck like it was any other day. I was halfway to work when I realized that I forgot to take a picture. :(
Damn, I need an edit function. That misplaced comma is bugging the hell out of me.
We have that same carpet in my son’s 1st grade class!! I was bouncing back and forth between 1st grade and 4th….transition to all day for my little one which resulted in him crashing on the sofa at 7ish and not waking up until this morning!
(and I can’t believe how big he is now…started reading when he was less than a year!)
I have my daughter on video tape crying because I was walking her in. She wanted to go in by herself but I couldn’t let her. Really, the school wanted us to walk them in. She was telling me to go away the whole time. “I can do it, Mama”! “Go AWAAAAYYYYY!” I wasn’t offended though. :) She’s in 3rd grade now and loves for me to come in. Go figure.
Wow, they’re anal! My new Kindergartener somehow missed a vaccine at his 5 yr checkup and we didn’t know until, oh, the day before school started. The best I could do was to get him in the afternoon after his first day, and the office at our school was totally cool about it. Perhaps it’s because I already have a 4th grader there… or your school is ANAL! ;) Congrats to everyone on the school year.
i just love that the whole family took him to his class. you guys got me all verklempt.
Now you’ve made me cry! Why is the first day of school so hard? My son started 1st grade and I still cried. I used the excuse of “now he’s in real school” for my defense but I think this will just be an annual tradition. Drive the kid to school, walk him to his class, get teary eyed while dropping him off and talking with the teacher, burst into tears as I walk out of the classroom.
I fell and scraped my cheek on my first day of kindergarten. They called my mom who came and then DIDN’T TAKE ME HOME! Oy. I am still indignant. I think I was just trying to get out of school, even at that early point… :)
I do not genuinely care how or after i get the Letters in the Mail. Every time it arrives, it feels like a letter should be. It’s suddenly there in my mail box 1 day. A nice, tangible surprise. I am for you doing whatever you want when you send it. Mix it up to the folks who help get it sent out. Include crumbs from your lunch. Coffee stains. Whatever. Keep the tedious character of getting letters out to a minimum by doing whatever you feel like that day. The arrival of the letter and the words in the author inside are what matters. Personally, what I like finest about The Rumpus is that I under no circumstances know what I’ll read through that day. Or if there isn’t one that day, maybe it’s because Stephen couldn’t obtain anything to say or there was way too much likely on.
Oh my goodness! a tremendous article dude. Thanks Nevertheless I’m experiencing issue with ur rss . Dont know why Unable to subscribe to it. Is there anybody getting similar rss drawback? Anybody who is aware of kindly respond. Thnkx

The pick-up of 3G in India has been slower than expected, partly due to high service prices but mainly because most Indians still use phones just to talk or send text messages. Internet browsing and making video calls are a technological world away for those living outside India’s cities.
