There’s this section of our backyard where the previous owners once had a large vegetable garden. JB would like to build a shop there someday, but for now it’s pretty much just a barren stretch of dirt and unwatered grass. For the last few days, Riley’s been talking about digging a “well” out there, and I’ve waved my hand in the universal Mom-language of Sure, okay, dig whatever you want, just don’t pester me right now. I’ve seen him working away with a narrow shovel, and I figured there would eventually be a small hole or two to deal with at some point. How much digging can an almost-eight-year-old really do, after all?

As it turns out:

Wait for it ....

lol sounds about right… I let my kids “dig for dinosaur bones” and they uncovered an underground cable line, scared me to death so no more digging but kids sure do love to dig!

That is the most awesome picture EVER. For a variety of reasons. The crossed legs, the hand on the hip, the solid grip in the shovel, the SMILES on both of the boys, the “head only” view. AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My only hope is that he slept well afterwards??

So. Stinking. Funny! My son surprises me every single time I turn around.

We found a minor hole had been dug near our home’s foundation last week, most likely by the neighbor’s lab, and we had our 7 year old out there with us filling it with dirt. When we had finished and were congratulating him on a job well done he followed it up with, “Man, those GD moles sure can make a mess.” Just out of the blue. Not based upon anything we had said. It was probably the most hilarious thing I’ve ever heard.

Hahahaha. Well, I guess if JB doesn’t set up a shop there by next spring, you can always send out Riley with some seeds and a tiller.

I think what I enjoy the most is that Riley now wears a watch, so I like to imagine he’s all, “DYLAN! Ten more minutes in the hole!”

Please tell me this photo is being mounted and framed. That’s mantle worthy right there.

(hysterical laughter aside, you gave them the cave-in-of-death talk, yeah?)
