Go-Jamaica hosts marketing seminar on power of the Internet

Put the power of the Internet to work in your business” was the slogan used in The Gleaner Online’s third annual Internet marketing seminar, held at the newspaper’s North Street central Kingston offices yesterday.

Dr Felix Akinladejo, lecturer of Internet marketing at the University of Technology (UTech), as well as managers, students, entrepreneurs, representatives from advertising agencies and marketing consultants, were in attendance.

“Internet marketing is the field of marketing or advertising a business on the World Wide Web. Because the Internet is so dynamic and is always changing, it is important that you keep up to date with the developments and designs that will enhance your web presence,” said Hope McMillan, project manager of The Gleaner Online and seminar presenter.

Participants for the over-subscribed seminar discussed an array of Internet marketing issues around how to expand your online reach and how the Internet can work for your business.

Marketing solution

The Gleaner Online team took the time to walk participants through various types of Internet marketing solutions, in particular, ad formats and properly utilising websites.

Based on a survey conducted after the seminar, the attendees expressed satisfaction with the venue, the information given, the length and way the information was presented and the level of interaction between the presenter and the audience.

“I’m sorry I came so late. The information was good and it cleared up many areas of concern,” said one individual.

The Gleaner Online’s Internet Marketing Seminar 2008, was considered by all a huge success.

Because of the large number of registrants, some could not be accommodated. However, another seminar of this nature will be held soon.

J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. says it will modify the terms of $70 billion in troubled, mostly adjustable-rate mortgages it holds.

The New York bank inherited many of the loans as part of its September purchase of a failed competitor, Washington Mutual Inc. (NYSE:WM), and its move will cover as many as 400,000 borrowers. J.P. Morgan said Friday the borrowers will be moved into loans carrying lower interest rates, smaller principal amounts or other more-affordable terms, The Wall Street Journal reported.

The move came shortly after the bank received a $25 billion capital infusion from the U.S. Treasury’s program to strengthen financial institutions and get credit flowing.

“Our goal in doing this was to come up with something that we think will lead the industry in helping as much as possible on this issue,” said J.P. Morgan executive Charles Scharf.

John Taylor, chief executive of the National Community Reinvestment Coalition, said the action was “a gutsy move on their part. They are bending over backward to try to reach out to these people.”

The US intelligence seems to be living in the world of illusions. Our congratulations to the new president on having such assistants.
The US National Intelligence Council (NIC), the body that is responsible for short-term and long-term strategic planning, prepared a report titled “Global Trends 2025.” The council makes such reports to the US administration once in five years.

The reports remind US administration what may happen in the world if it does not run certain policies. The main goal of the latest report is to inform President-elect Barack Obama of the factors that will affect world affairs in the future. The document particularly warns Obama of the risks which may appear in the transition to the new system during the forthcoming 20 years.

Thomas Fingar, the Chairman of the National Intelligence Council, believes that there is an opportunity to avoid the harmful consequences of the transition period. Fingar believes that the USA may have a better world at its disposal by 2025 if the US administration pays attention to those problems and takes certain efforts to solve them.

It is worthy of note that these “Global Trends” reports from NIC are known for their mistakes. In “Trends 2010,” “Trends 2015” and “Trends 2020” intelligence experts predicted something absolutely contrary to their current points of view. They particularly envisaged an increasing role of the European Union and the stable growth of Western economies on the level of approximately 2 percent a year. It is supposed to happen in 2010.

The NIC has to do a very ungrateful job. It is supposed to coordinate and summarize analytical materials from all intelligence centers of the United States – the CIA, the political intelligence of the State Department, the army intelligence, the navy intelligence, the Treasury intelligence, etc. The report says that the USA will continue to lose its international influence in the world during the first quarter of the current century. It will keep its superpower status although the erstwhile predominance will be lost. The same fate is in store for the US dollar.
The report said that the current financial crisis is only the first stage of the changing global world order. The role of the US dollar as the fundamental global currency will reduce. Brazil, India and China will fill the gap that the USA will make for them. The three countries may even take measures to join their efforts. Analysts wrote that Russia, India and China hold best chances to become world’s most influential superpowers by 2025.
The multipolar world will emerge, and the Western models of economic liberalism and democracy will lose their appeal entirely. The European Union will also lose its influence. Europe will not be able to overcome its energy dependence by 2025. About 57 percent of global gas reserves in 2025 will be concentrated in Russia, Iraq and Qatar.

Many current oil makers will lose their current positions too. Six countries will control almost 40 percent of the global oil output: Russia, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates and Iraq.

The report pays special attention to the danger of the nuclear arms race in the Middle East. Iran’s decisions regarding its nuclear program may push several regional powers to taking more efforts on the way to building their own nukes. More importantly, the appearance of nuclear arms in the Middle East will not result in the establishment of the containment system, similar to that during the Cold War era. Quite on the contrary, the nukes will let the countries of the region continue their military and terrorist operations with the use of conventional arms.

A possible use of nuclear weapons during the upcoming 15 or 20 years will strike a severe blow on the international system, and the world will immediately face enormous humanitarian, economic and political consequences, the authors of the report wrote. A nuclear threat may lead to serious geopolitical changes when non-nuclear countries will be forced to ally with nuclear powers.

The “Global Trends 2025” report shows that the United States is losing its international role and proves to be unable to build normal relations with other countries. In general, the USA cannot find its place in the changing world.

Валютный рынок наступивший 2009 год встретил под знаком ожидания снижения базовой процентной ставки Европейским Центробанком. Предпосылок для снижения хоть отбавляй: здесь и декабрьский обвал сводного индекса делового и потребительского доверия к экономике еврозоны до рекордного минимума с начала расчета индикатора в 1985 году, и возросшая до максимального значения за два года безработица, и ослабление инфляции. Сочетания этих трех причин вполне достаточно для снижения ставки. Учитывая последнюю причину, удешевление денег становится неизбежно.

«Инфляционный тренд сейчас очень благоприятен, — отмечает старший экономист по европейским рынкам Fortis в Амстердаме Ник Кунис. — Это дает ЕЦБ возможность для маневров в плане снижения ставок». При этом отметим, что заседание ЕЦБ состоится уже на следующей неделе. Согласно форвардным контрактам на уровень процентной ставки в еврозоне, инвесторы ожидают ее уменьшения, как минимум, на 0,5 процентного пункта — до 2 проц., минимального уровня за три года.

На фоне этих ожиданий курс доллара и вырос к евро. На закрытии торгов в пятницу европейская валюта стоила 1,3429 долл., тогда как 31 декабря за евро давали 1,3969 долл. За неделю стоимость евро опустилась на 3,3 проц., что стало максимальным падением с октября 2008 года. «Рынок фокусирует внимание на том, что предпримет ЕЦБ, — отмечает валютный стратег BNP Paribas Securities в Нью-Йорке Себастьен Гэли. — Ожидания снижения ставки растут, и инвесторы все более негативно оценивают перспективы евро». При этом, согласно прогнозам директора подразделения валютной стратегии RBS Greenwich Capital Markets в Чикаго Дастина Райда, курс доллара к евро уже в ближайшее время вернется к уровню 1,3 долл.

Натиск доллара сегодня сдерживает, пожалуй, только иена. Ее сила обусловлена продажей инвесторами высокодоходных активов, сопровождающейся погашением кредитов в японской валюте. Напомним, что в 2008 году стоимость доллара опустилась к иене на 19 проц. Новый год для иены начался с прибавки в 1,6 проц. по отношению к доллару и в 4,7 проц. по отношению к евро. На закрытие торгов в пятницу за доллар давали 90,24 иены, за евро — 121,17 иены.

Российский валютный рынок характеризуется сегодня, с одной стороны, полноценным следованиям западным тенденциям, с другой, продолжением курса ЦБ РФ на ослабление национальной валюты, что, впрочем, не является неожиданностью, поскольку в последний день торгов Центробанк уже позволил бивалютной корзине расширить границы за пределы 35 рублей. Последующее возвращение границ в рамки предыдущего торгового дня стало, возможно, лишь следованием заверениям руководства страны о недопустимости предновогодней девальвации.

Однако текущее положение дел в экономике диктует свои условия. А оно (положение) таково: российским компаниям и банкам необходима иностранная валюта для погашения долговых обязательств в объеме более 80 млрд долл. в этом году. В связи с этим аналитики Societe Generale полагают, что стоимость рубля относительно бивалютной корзины может опуститься в январе на 10 проц.

Предположения аналитиков уже начинают сбываться. Уже в течение пяти первых минут торгов на российском рынке доллар взял отметку 30,553 руб., что на 1 руб. 19 копеек выше официального курса ЦБ РФ на новогодних каникулах. Евро, в свою очередь, покорилась отметка лишь в 41,2932 руб., что на 13 копеек ниже официального курса. Однако при этом стоимость бивалютной корзины, разом преодолев отметку в 35 рублей, зафиксировала границу на уровне 35,38 руб., что почти на 60 копеек больше предновогодней.

К 11:30 мск ситуация на рынке изменилась мало. Доллар, отступив всего на две копейки, остановился на отметке 30,5331 руб. (именно этот курс и станет официальным курсом ЦБ с завтрашнего дня). Евро вынужден был отдать рублю еще 16 копеек, зафиксировав 41,1312 руб. При этом стоимость бивалютной корзины также слегка скорректировалась — до 35,30 руб., что на 50 копеек выше предыдущего уровня.

Отметим, впрочем, что границы бивалютной корзины расширяются по обыкновению в обе стороны и подразумевают не однонаправленное изменение курса рубля. Первый зампред ЦБ РФ Алексей Улюкаев в интервью газете «Ведомости» подчеркивает: «Я убежден, что наши действия по расширению коридора колебаний курса рубля не есть девальвация. Это именно перемещение границ курсовых колебаний. Я верю, что в 2009 г. колебания курсов валют будут двусторонними. И будет гораздо более волатильный курс. И возможный цикл ослабления национальной валюты гораздо короче, чем цикл укрепления».
