This weekend started out in a pile of suck, what with Riley getting sick again—seriously, third time in three weeks, I have no goddamned idea what’s going on but I am about ready to encase both kids in Purell-filled bubbles and camp outside the pediatrician office with a loaded Mini-14 target rifle until someone hands over one of those precious fucking STILL-not-available flu vaccinations, and YES! IRONY! IT’S WHAT’S FOR DINNER!—but I’m happy to say things greatly improved on Saturday when I ditched my family altogether in order to run a 5K with Ashley.

Not pictured: our lungs, because they shot out our respective eyesockets about halfway through the course while gasping our way up an Everest-sized hill. I knew about the hill ahead of time, but here’s the thing: knowing is, in fact, NOT half the battle. Half the battle is running up a motherfucking hill. The other half is not puking while doing so.

Later, it was time for Thrill the World. I was feeling pretty good about my ripped, bloodied Goodwill dress and sunken zombie eyesockets until Ashley showed up in this genius ensemble:

Not only was the killed-while-running outfit brilliant (and obviated the need for a costume-deflating sweater), she also had the most disgusting latex flesh wound I’ve ever seen outside of a Troma film. I mean, that thing erupting off her face was so realistically, hideously repulsive, I was a little ashamed of my attempt at a neck wound scab, which I ended up covering with gauze because I couldn’t seem to bridge the gap from “pile of fake red slime” to “bloody festering bite of the undead”.

The event itself was so much fun. Just getting down there and shambling around with a bunch of other dressed-up people was awesome, and it was a hoot to be the subject of about a million camera-wielding tourists’ snapshots.

Some people had some really clever costume ideas:

And some people seemed a little . . . unclear on the concept:

I don’t have pictures of the actual dance, but you will simply have to imagine me performing the moves with perfect accuracy, never once missing a cue or stumbling into the person beside me. In fact, just watch the original Michael Jackson video. I was about that good, maybe a little better.

*cough*

Anyway, I had a fantastic time and I highly, highly recommend to each and every one of you that you experience a group Thriller dance at least once in your lifetime. In fact, BlogHer 2010 ThrillBlog performance? WHO’S WITH ME.

No link to the video! SHAME ON YOU!

I cant’ even imagine the looks on those tourists faces. Absolutely classic.

That’s great! Grats on the 5K run, and you look really scary in the costume. Our city does something similar but for local charity.

What fun! (The dance I mean, not so much the 5k. Although good for you guys!)

Dude. You know I’m in.

Also. Riley and Dylan? MADE MY DAY.

You look awesome! I’m doing Thrill The World in Toronto in 2010, my friend has already said she’d do it with me too! SO EXCITED FOR NEXT YEAR!

Linda, I’m not sure if you’ll classify this as a compliment or not, but here goes:

You make a terrific zombie.

Ahh wow, I think I might just have to bookmark this entry and refer to it any time I think about being lazy! A 5k run in the morning and thrilling the world in the afternoon?! You astound me!

Thanks Linda – I find it really inspiring to see you meeting the challenges you’ve set yourself that are out of your comfort zone. Rock on, indeed. xx

Tonights news bulleting says that in Asutralia we will probalby waste about 10 million doses of the H1N1 vaccine – seems we bought more than we needed. Maybe you should just jump on a plane, get the jab, then go home again. Nice little outing.

Fantastic. It looks like so much fun! And I love Dylan’s “rawr” face in the last shot. Your kids are deadly cute.

Seriously, you thought you looked lame? NO! There is no lameness in your zombie face! That last picture, with your mirth and yet scary makeup and double-jointed fingers is sort of creeping me out. Like seriously.

Anyway, congrats on the 5K, and on the dance. It looks like so much fun! Well, not the Hill of Doom, but yeah, you = badass, just like I’m always saying.

Also, I wanted to let you know that you’ve inspired me to make some changes in my own life, first with my health, and also with other things I’m unhappy with, namely my career. Your analysis the other day on why you inherently said “I can’t” when you were invited to New Orleans made me question why I “can’t” change my career. What’s stopping me? What can I do to change what’s stopping me? So thank you. For writing about your life and your goals and your taking everying can’t and turning it into a can and will. You’ve changed my life.

The lady in the zebra stripes… Maybe… well, nope, I can’t even pretend to explain that.

Awesome weekend! Sorry to hear Riley is up-chucking again.

Awesome! I totally forgot about the thrill dance thing on Saturday night. It looks like a blast and good job on the 5k too :)

Oh, that does look like so much fun! I think my new hobby and goal should be to get into shape enough to be able to run a 5k faster than the walkers can walk a 5k and then travel the state/country “running 5k’s”. Like, total mini-vacations in disguise. Or, I could travel the country doing the thriller dance. You know, which ever!

Love the zombies.

So another bonus for the Mardi Gras HM. We don’t have those things called hills in NOLA. Seriously. Flat as a pancake. Well, except for the pothole craters. I die anytime I try to run in other parts of the country.

Re the after-5K photo – how can you always look 12 years old? They are going to be carding you in bars when you’re 50!

THat was Creepy!!! Both of you look totally scary. I avoided that whole part of town because that stuff scares me a bit. Ok. A lot.

Despite the awesomeness of those pictures, I had to go directly to the bottom to post a comment to say that just last night, my 14 month old in the heat of his worst tantrum yet GRABBED A FIST OF DOG HAIR and shoved it in his mouth…complete with the “and what are you going to do about it face” and all.

I was SO trying to make it to Pioneer Square in time to see the dance but got stuck on effing I-5 S in traffic!!!! I drove by DURING the dance, but only heard music and saw a strobe light, while attempting to ditch my car, but was re-directed by a rent a cop due to the Sounders game.

So, my son and I got there in time to see everyone LEAVING. We stuck around to see the marching band for the Sounders pep rally, I sulked, and we came back home.

OMG, can we PLEASE make it official? A BlogHer 2010 group Thriller dance would be the greatest thing EVER.

(Also, kudos on the hilly 5k. I just walked a route I’ve run for other races, and kept thinking, “How the hell did I manage this one?”)

Just saw your running schedule for the half marathon on Flickr. It looks to me like the Hal Higdon plan – if that’s the case, it’s a great program. I’ve used his plans for half marathons and marathons and have done well and improved my times over the years. Good luck!

how cool is thrill the world? my roommate and i (who both love your blog) did the thriller down here in portland.
who knew synchronized choreography could be such a rush? (and such a workout! we learned it in like 2 nights, dancing nonstop)
if you haven’t seen it yet, youtube has a 5-part “making of” the original thriller video with interviews and behind the scenes stuff, including zombie makeup and dance rehearsals. it was kind of nice to see even michael jackson had to figure it out at some point.

I don’t see Troma films mentioned on Mommy Blogs often enough.

You look AWESOME. And I’m impressed at the boys. The baby cried over me wearing a black wig for my Katinka-from-Zoolander costume.

You do a great job in the zombie photo of hanging your head at an odd angle. that’s a key point, there.
Also, your boys must think you are the COOlEST MOM EVAR. What mom dresses up like a zombie for the hell of it and dances to Thriller? Awesome.

Its like you read my mind! You seem to know so much about this, like you wrote the book in it or something. I think that you could do with a few pics to drive the message home a little bit, but other than that, this is excellent blog. An excellent read. I’ll definitely be back.
