It sure feels like an in-between season right now. Just last week it was so summery and warm, and all of a sudden there’s that telltale crisp autumn scent in the air and cooler temperatures and it’s PITCH GODDAMNED BLACK at 7:30 PM but it’s not quite fall. Not quite. We’re in between.

I feel like I should be settled into a new not-summer routine but the transition has been rough. The kids rattle around the house going crazy in the evenings and I look out at our not-fall backyard and send them out to shuffle around in the leaves and muddy up their shoes and I feel a little despairing about the long dark days ahead when we’ll be stuck in our rapidly-shrinking house. I am already starting to get a hint of a Shining type vibe, is all I’m saying.

Also, I am awfully glad for our new companion.

I think she will be a comforting presence this year, a furry little zenball in the swirling maelstrom of boy-related chaos.

How are you feeling about fall these days? Happy to usher it in, or sad to see summer go?

I’m glad you’re enjoying kitty so much. She looks like such a sweet thing.

Fall came to Minnesota a few weeks ago, so I trundled through all the packed-clothes and pulled out the sweaters and long pants already. Now that my girls are 1, 1, and 3, I’m wondering what exactly we’re going to do on weekends all winter long. I can’t exactly send us all outside when it’s -20F out, but I sure as heck am going to continue taking them to parks as long as I can. I’m investigating indoor playgrounds and gyms and the like, but it looks like they all charge admission (gets kind of spendy for 5 of us). So now I’m thinking about getting a huge air mattress and having our own little bouncy castle experience.

I am so, so sad to see summer go. Despairing is the perfect word to describe how I feel about the approaching loooooong season of shitty weather and little day light. Sigh.

I live in Alaska, so fall comes pretty quick up here. I do love it, but winter is so fast in coming, it is a very fast season for us.

I am so glad Callie is an indoor cat, I get very nervous when cats are allowed to roam outside.

I am usually so sad to see summer go. I love summer, but this year it was so hot for so long that the cooler days have been so welcome. Not looking forward to winter, though. Just fall would be okay.

The Shining! One of the most frightening books and most hilarious movies ever!

I want fall now. This summer in Oklahoma was so brutal. I long for crisp air and soft snugly clothes. Right now I’m parched and I just want all this warm air to end!

Callie looks like a soft snugly beast to pet on chilly evenings. I’m terribly jealous.

Love your cat’s patchwork coat. She looks lovely.

My SO and I have SAD awful bad. We live in the Southeast, so things are still summer-ish, but our winters are just rainy and depressing. Yuck.

Man, that cat moved right on in and made herself at home! So cute! Not super psyched about summer ending. I have been cooking more lately though. I made apple crapple the other day, which I think I got the recipe for here, like a million years ago.

I mourn summer’s end. Arkansas has had the best summer – hot and humid, just the way this southern girl likes it. Fall is nice; I love Halloween and football games and whatnot. It just sucks that it is immediately followed by winter. And it seems like our winters are especially brutal – either tons of snow and ice (last year we got two feet dumped on us in 6 hours), or just day after day of grey skies and cold rain. Yuck.

Can I just say that that little pumpkin has the cutest little bun buns!?
I love that you got a cat. I wish we had a pet at the moment. Maybe next summer we’ll decide.
I am so not looking forward to winter. It’s a 6-7 month affair up in these parts. Blahhhh. On the upside, we’re going to South Africa for a month so YAY!

Awww, I don’t care about the rest of this post, I just care about how comfortable Callie already looks in your home. She’s already part of the family! It makes my cat-loving heart warm, despite the sudden autumn chill (I’m in Vancouver, B.C, so we’re experiencing the same).

Bring on the the fall weather. So tired of being sweaty all the time. Living in Arizona, this is the time of year we live for. We can finally go to the park, have picnics and ride bikes, and go on slides, and the list goes on and on and on. It’s been a long hot summer.

We had maybe 2 chilly days and nights a couple of weeks ago and now heat and humidity came roaring back in the northeast.
I’m not ready for fall and chilly weather as I need to get a couple pair of pants that I will be able to fit into comfortably (all that summer fun!)

I am so sad to see the summer end. Sounds crazy, right? But I love the long evenings and the blast of heat that hits when you walk outside. Unlike winter, where you peek out early in the morning trying not to freeze, but to see the road conditions. Then bundle up in four layers of clothing and hope it doesn’t snow/ice while you are at work. I want to move somewhere that doesn’t have four seasons. Somewhere where it doesn’t snow/sleet/ice and might get chilly, but not freezing cold.

Every year I feel bad for you guys with the long cold winters you get, but living in the armpit of the south, I count down and relish this time of year; it’s my annual hobby. If I could find somewhere to live where lows are in the 50’s and highs are 70’s, I’d move there. Tomorrow.

I LOVE your cat already, mmrrrowwr!

This season is always so bittersweet… I’m reluctant to say goodbye to summer, but kind of excited to get out the fall wardrobe and salt up some root vegetables.

Alexa at Flotsam just wrote something about the “nostalgia for right now” that comes with having kids, and I thought that just about sums it up. I’ll never have this summer again! Or this fall, or this winter! That hasn’t happened yet! Wahh! Stop growing, babies!

The passing of time just kills me.

I love Fall. I, like Paige, live in Arkansas, and if I NEVER see 114 degrees with 90% humidity again, it’ll be too soon. I hate humidity, it makes me stabby, so I’m looking forward to sleeping with the windows open, bundled under a mound of covers.

I even like the dark afternoons and rainy days. Call me crazy!

I’m straight up dreading winter. Since I’m originally from the south, where they don’t have winter, I am NOT used to this cold weather/snow/ice crap. Not used to it and not looking forward to it. But if the weather just wanted to be fall-like for about the next 5 months I’d be ok with that!

I am dreading winter. I don’t know what to do with a toddler in the house by myself all weekend long. I need to go to the park or the beach or just on a long walk. Ugh, winter.

I hate to start the season off so down already, and it’s going to happen no matter what, so dreading it seems unproductive, too. But the house can seem so small when you can’t leave it.

Depends on the moment of the day for me. Sometimes I am happy for the change in seasons and cooler temps, then other times it blows, like when I have to take all 3 kids by myself to a soccer game during nap time. (I guess that blows no matter what season). The beginning of Fall here in Oklahoma is beautiful with the football games and tailgaters, etc. Here in a month I’ll be joining you with the Shining stuff. LOVE your new kitty. She’s so pretty and calming through the screen even…

I really feel like we are in that in-between stage, but really, we’re not.

Today’s projected high? 101.

And all those brown leaves on the ground and in the trees that make it look kinda sorta like fall? Dead leaves from dead trees from one of the worst droughts ever.

But, my silly Texas girls get chilly and insist on jackets on the mornings when it is in the low 70s, because my gosh, that is practically freezing when you’ve had over 80 days above 100 this year!

So, so happy that autumn is on its way. I like the fun you get to have in the summer, but I hate the heat, and I live in OK, so this summer in particular was brutal and I’m so ready for it to be over.

Christina

I am sad to see summer go this year. I love fall but I have grown more and more weary of winter over the past few years. I love summer and the heat so it is always hard to transition but this year in particular it seems like I am fighting it with every fiber of my being… Oh well.

I’m mentally ready for Fall: I’ve got some pumpkin/acorn decorations in our living room and I really want to start lighting the Autumny-y candles I just bought. My brain is beginning to crave pork and apples, pot roast, and spiced pumpkin dishes. Unfortunately, it’s still about 80 degrees and grossly humid over here in the Mid-Atlantic region, so there’s definitely some cognitive dissonance going on.

Whenever I’ve gotten dressed in the last week, I’ve found myself running my fingers longingly over my corduroy pants, and flipping through my long-sleeved shirts. Then I sigh and pull out another t-shirt and pair of shorts. I *should* be relishing these last days of warmth, though, because I hate the cold, rainy weather that’s about to hit us for the next 6-7 months (I suspect I have SAD; I’m starting to supplement vitamin D right now). Really, I’d just be pleased if it cooled down enough that I could turn off the air conditioning and be comfortable with the windows open.

There was a subtle change in the light around here in mid-August, and I knew summer was on it’s way out. Our falls are gorgeous, and thankfully it looks like we’ll make it into October before we get our first snow. Still, I just dropped off winter coats to be cleaned, and checking the weather every night to see when my tomatoes need to be covered and am trying to mentally prepare for 6-8 months of not being able to leave the house without putting on 94750298672 layers of clothes. It’s a difficult mental adjustment, and I whine about it more and more each year.

So happy to see Fall come and Summer go. I live in Michigan so Fall is pretty awesome here. I already have a couple of hay bales out in the front of the house with a mum plant in a pumpkin pot and a scarecrow guarding one of them. Its my favorite time of year; cider mills, pumpkins and of course Halloween!

I really want summer to go away, but right now in MD we have warm weather and rain and disgusting humidity that’s been giving me a headache for days. I just want to put on my jeans and my socks and get snuggly. (But then, I’m from Ireland. I don’t like the heat.) I hear you about the routine though – we’re only just starting to get it and I feel like it’ll be Christmas any second.
Love the cat. She’s beautiful.

I love you cat! I am curious to know if she sheds alot, and if so, how do you get rid of the hair? I seriously want another indoor kitty but the last two I had shed badly and I couldn’t handle it.

And wow! at the cords hooked up to your laptop! Does that make you a techie?

Here in Oregon it is much the same. It’s dark as hell when I get up and go to work and they are going to have to shorten my son’s soccer practice to 6:30 from 7:00 soon. The weather in the evenings, however, is mild and the kids are full of energy, but I know the rainy season is coming and I’m also dreading us being in the house most of the day. Suiting up to go outside and tramping mud everywhere when coming back in.

It is extra nice to have a lovey kitty in the rainy months though!

I’m torn about fall, probably because I live in Central/South Texas. I like the idea of fall, as people who live in the real world experience it. Today, the weatherman said, “Temperatures should transition to more fall-life by this weekend, with highs around 92.” If that’s fall, I’m ready for winter.

But your version of fall? Yes, please!!

adequatemom

At the moment I feel happy to welcome fall. I am way better at autumn and winter cooking (crockpot! casseroles! soups! stews!) than I am at summer cooking (how can I turn on the oven, it’s too damn hot in here!). On the other hand, I totally get what you mean about the shrinking house. I will probably be totally over fall in a month or so.

I feel like I missed summer. It wasn’t hot enough or hot long enough or something. It’s dark when I get up and soon will be dark when I get to the park with the crazy little dog. I’m sad about it. I don’t want to be cold again so soon.

As another central Texan, I am desperately ready for anything even resembling fall. I’ve had enough of these triple-digit temperatures, please and thanks.

I love fall, I love that it gets dark early, I love that crisp smell in the air, I love taking my kids to the pumpkin patch. I can’t WAIT.

I am so glad to see summer on its way out. DC always has horrendously humid and hot summers (hey! alliteration!), but this summer really took the cake, with heat indices reaching 120. No thank you. Of course, we’ve since had an incredibly rainy fall and yesterday my husband noticed that our sidewalk is growing moss. Our CEMENT SIDEWALK. MOSS. Can we just skip straight to spring? I got no complaints about that.

So effin’ ready to usher summer outta here. Usher? Hell, I’m chasin’ her out of here with a sickle (appropriate for fall, isn’t it? Ha ha!). Texas summers are always brutal, but breaking the record of days with temps over 100 is quite the smart-ass thing to do, mother fucker, errr….nature. Anyway – fall is my favorite season, what with pumpkin patches, Halloween, COOLER TEMPS (but not cold often in TX!), football, and slower schedules and all, but then I’m happy to skip right to spring!

After spending my entire life living in Southern California, I moved up to Tacoma at the end of June. So far I have loved it here, the weather has been mostly sunny and perfect (being summer and all), and even the gray and rainy days have felt kind of exotic and fun. Which is kind of how I feel about the upcoming season…excited for something a little different. Of course, talk to me in two months when I’m curled up on the floor and I’l probably be begging for sun…but whatever! Spirit of adventure! I am definitely looking forward to Holidays though, and I keep mentally planning totally kick ass halloween parties, when I suddenly remember that I don’ really have any friends here yet. So my new goal is to make enough friends to throw fun Holiday parties! And you know, have a strong support system with a mutual sense of love and affection. But also parties! Weren’t we talking about the weather?

I live in a place where winters are way too long and terribly cold, so while I don’t mind September through November, I HATE December through March. And September just brings me one month closer to December. The shorter days get to me. I’ve noticed September has been a very hard month for me emotionally for the past few years. Also, my energy level is lower.

But, you know, I can’t change the weather and I can’t move so I guess I have to suck it up.

I love Fall, the changing of the leaves, all things pumpkin and the slow move toward winter. However, like you, the transision to school routine for my girls has been rough. I’m completely overwhelmed in so many arenas, that mostly I sit wondering what to do first. Lately I’ve been thinking of scrapping it all and starting yoga. And then one of the gremlins comes screaming and my fleeting thought is sucked away…..

I would like to order up my own year of seasons. I love fall and spring, not a huge fan of hot, humid summers and long, wet, dreary winters. But summer and winter have their fun bits, too. I’d like winter be be just long and snowy enough to make to holidays feel right…so, maybe just start winter right about after Thanksgiving. Run it through til just about the middle o’ February. That’s when I’ve had just about enough. Get Spring rolling for a few months. Short sleeves and jeans. Then summer. And not 4 months of triple digits. Two months of just warm enough that my kids lips don’t turn blue in the swimming pool. Then back to Fall please.

I love fall!!! But I also live in Northern California so it’s not such a drastic change for us (other than the being dark when I have to get up) I love the smells, everything pumpkin and oh yeah, doesn’t hurt that October means my birthday, my youngest son’s birthday and then HALLOWEEN!!!

But damn it came so fast. I’ll be 44 in a few short days and I just don’t feel nearly grown up enough to be that old. I think I’ll focus on his birthday and Halloween instead!

happy for fall and all it brings. not as excited about managing a 20-month-old mostly inside over the winter. yesterday we had one of those days…the dissolving-into-puddles-of-tears-over-every-perceived-injustice days…and memories of the fantastic way you have written about tantrums kept me sane (like that one about a kid with shark arms, or something). anyway. also hoping you might repost your recipe for those pumpkin/chocolate muffins or cookies.
