It sure feels like an in-between season right now. Just last week it was so summery and warm, and all of a sudden there’s that telltale crisp autumn scent in the air and cooler temperatures and it’s PITCH GODDAMNED BLACK at 7:30 PM but it’s not quite fall. Not quite. We’re in between.

I feel like I should be settled into a new not-summer routine but the transition has been rough. The kids rattle around the house going crazy in the evenings and I look out at our not-fall backyard and send them out to shuffle around in the leaves and muddy up their shoes and I feel a little despairing about the long dark days ahead when we’ll be stuck in our rapidly-shrinking house. I am already starting to get a hint of a Shining type vibe, is all I’m saying.

(All he needs is a Steadicam and a geometrically-patterned carpet.)

Also, I am awfully glad for our new companion.

I think she will be a comforting presence this year, a furry little zenball in the swirling maelstrom of boy-related chaos.

How are you feeling about fall these days? Happy to usher it in, or sad to see summer go?

I live in Texas and we’re still having days in the mid to high 90’s. The drought and insane heat wave this summer have turned my yard into a giant sand box. I am SO ready for fall.

I love love love the fall. We took the girls to the zoo today, and will go to the pumpkin patch tomorrow. Outings are so much nicer when they don’t involve sweat.

Love the apple catwich – congrats on your new family member!

The cat is adorable. It’s so cute she is already so comfortable in your family.

I am beyond ready for fall. We had a horribly hot June and July in Iowa and a somewhat more mild August. I’ve been ready for fall since June 1st ;)

I would love fall if it wasn’t the harbinger of oh-so-hated winter. Dark at 4:30, cold, salty, dirty slush, bad traffic, a million layers to bundle up in and strip off constantly… bleagh.

Yes, I have the same feeling of DREAD about being inside the house all winter with two small kids! What to do with children on long winter evenings?

I’m ready for Fall. However, I will still be bitching in February about how sick I am of rain. :) I’ve been baking pumpkiny treats, and decorated for Halloween. I like the crisp sunny days as much as the blustery ones, and the air just smells…..clean? I’ll be a ‘hunting widow’ starting in October, but I do okay with the kiddo on my own.

I know you were talking about the transition to fall and asked a question I should answer, but all I can say is “Kitty!” I’m totally fixated on how cute Callie is. Fall, whatever.
